New to EF - Rules

As mentioned in my earlier post, I have been in Switzerland for the past 3 years. I just posted 10+ comments online only to have a "Mod" deleted them. Overall, the posts contained valuable recommendations.

Not a great start to EF.

This is not an introduction.

I'm totally guessing (as I can't see the posts, obviously!) but you probably posted 10 useless "fluff" posts, especially as you've been in Switzerland for 3 years and only just decided to join, no doubt to try and sell something in a forum area which has rules in place so that it's primarily used by people who have otherwise contributed to the forum.

On a totally unrelated topic you seem to be leaving Switzerland soon (based on your almost useless, sorry I mean "valuable recommendation" you just made to the Billag thread, which has survived so obviously better than the other posts you made...) so no doubt would be trying to sell loads of stuff? Just a guess, like.

Personally, I think the rules on the selling area of this forum are stupid, but I've made that argument to the mods/admin before and lost. Oh well.

jeffz 18.05.2014 23:44

hesitant to mention names. The posts were valid and should not have been deleted. They were not fluff comments -- but value add based on my three years here in Switzerland.

I will fully admit that I did 10 + posts so that I could then give away a nice Ikea futon rather than taking it to the garbage / recycling center next weekend.

Does not seem very environmentally friendly to throw it out.

I love how much venom people have online.

Not selling - giving away.

Oh for goodness sake!
What about the "fluff" that the so called "forum legends" post? Last Friday, one such "fluffy" thread: http://www.englishforum.ch/other-gen...ming-mate.html...

Not a great start to EF.

You could just post another ten useful posts and thus integrate into EF :D

Suggestions:
  • link to a nice restaurant
  • post a tasty recipe
  • rant about public transportation
  • suggest a nice place to visit in Switzerland
  • write a topic on how (not) to go vegan
  • write about your favorite food from home
  • find a new shop which sells brown sugar

Welcome to the forum :)

Yeah, I saw someone called Uno'sGarden had posted in that thread. Fluff indeed.

I think this thread and jeffz treatment is proof that I'm right - the sale/free area shouldn't have special rules. I still don't see why people selling stuff (or giving stuff away) isn't viewed as a useful contribution in its own right.

Re: New to EF - Rules

I posted about restaurants, driving in Switzerland, ski rentals experience... etc.

I value EF and have been a reader for years. However, the admins/Mods should be aware of the current view count of the different sections. The market place always has the most activity and viewers online at any given moment.

I am sure that others on this network will disagree.

Re: New to EF - Rules

The main reason for preventing new members from posting sales items as soon as they join up, the way I see it, is to avoid flooding the forum with advertising from both legitimate and illegitimate sellers.

As someone who was made to wait 45 minutes in sub-zero temperatures to meet someone who promised to sell me a pram for my small baby.... And failed to show up, did not return text messages and did not apologise.... I agree. The alleged seller had no track history and faded I to oblivion afterwards...

If you want to get rid of stuff, try www.tutti.ch it is essentially an advertising site with very little requirements....and will avoid the hassle of having to contribute in a meaningful way to the forum....or the grumpiness...:o

Re: New to EF - Rules

Also, I have to say there I'm moving and need to sell/give some stuff away, and when I was searching the net for ideas how to do this I remembered this little forum that I've forgotten since when I first arrived in Switzerland.. Anyways, after reading the rules I decided to start exploring and see if I had something meaningful to post, turns out I did, and now I not only found a place where I can sell/give stuff but I can talk about my pregnancy and dog to hearts content!! Guess what I'm trying to say is: thanks to the rules now I have so much more than a platform where I can change stuff and I think that this might be the point of the rules: to guaranty that this site is much more than an exchanging of stuff platform but also an exchange of ideas!

I don't know, just my own opinion..:)

Those are not really forum legends.
Government agencies hack these accounts so that they can control and manipulate us:rolleyes:

Re: New to EF - Rules

thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely check out tutti.com.

Agree that this is a great website and more than a selling platform. But I was also a bit shocked when prior posts were deleted by a Mod... which prompted me to start this whole thread. :)

Tutti.ch. No guarantees on what you'd get if you tried .com ;)

all mods and members on this forum are utterly useless. Mainly me, but also AdrianLondon.

Re: New to EF - Rules

I read some of your posts before they were removed Jeff, and well, they weren't very interesting to me at all. You were mainly giving us
your opinions on stuff in Switzerland, that we could easily find online, which I suspected you were in fact doing.

I am with Adrian on this, do we really need the sales or giving stuff away threads? Maybe Jeff-Z could start a thread on this very subject?

Those are called "double standards". I'm allowed to have them but you are not.

I think they were totally out of line deleting your posts to be honest. I found some of the recommendations you gave useful and even gave you a thanks for it before it was deleted.

So please do stick around.
