How To: Upload Photos into EF

No matter if you are blond, brunette, red... or have nothing upstairs

Here is a brief look at uploading photos into the English Forum Photo Gallery.

Four screen shots to assist you:
------------------------------------------------------------

Screen Shot 1

From almost anywhere within the EF you can click on A "Photos" to begin the upload procedure. This will open a window that looks similar to the screen shot you see above in Screen Shot 1.

Once here, click on the text "Upload Photos" at B on the right side of the screen will take you to Screen Shot 2 below.

------------------------------------------------------------

Screen Shot 2

In the second screen shot there are a number of blanks that need to be completed in order to ensure a proper upload of your photo. Select a category at A which best represents the theme of your photo.

Once you have selected the category, click on "Browse..." at B. This will open a window in which you may navigate and select one or more photo files to upload to the EF Photo Gallery. In the selection window, more than one file may be highlighted or selected for upload by using the "Control" key and left mouse click together.

To give the photo a title, complete the text block at C. You should enter at least a simple title for the sake (and sanity) of those viewing your photos.

At D you may, but not required to, enter a text description for the photo.

When you click on the "Upload/Submit" at E, the file will be copied to the English Forum Server and titled as you directed above.

------------------------------------------------------------

Screen Shot 3

As a confirmation, the Forum will present to you Screen Shot 3, which includes the photo and details you entered in the previous screen. If you have any changes to make, click on "Edit Photo" at A. This will open up Screen Shot 4.

------------------------------------------------------------

Screen Shot 4

Most fields are available for your necessary editing - A. Also, you may rotate or mirror/flip the photo.
When completed updating the information, click again on B - "Upload/Submit".

------------------------------------------------------------

There you go! Simple!! Give it a try and share your photos with the rest of us.

Re: How To: Upload Photos into EF

If you could do us a big favor, try to keep the photos to a fairly small size. We've only got about 7GB of disk space left on the server.

If you can, get a free JAlbum or Flickr account and host your images there and link back.

Re: How To: Upload Photos into EF

A few small pictures are definitely okay though. So, do attach images for things that will be useful for people to look at in the future. But, images for the Funny Cats thread and the like, should be hosted on an external server.

I second that motion!

The freebie JAlbum is simple and very flexible... You must have your own hosting to go this route. If you do not have hosting, then give Flickr a look.

To add a little more; Mark created a JAlbum skin called Exhibit+. I use JAlbum and Exhibit+ in my Webgalleries at GUGGUS. Check it out

Those should all be links, not attachments. There are a few that are attachments but most of them should be links. No?

Actually, JAlbum.net has free accounts (look for the link at the bottom of the page). They're not very big (30MB), but JAlbum also automatically resizes the photos for you, and does a good job. It's got a nice interface for Windows/Mac/Linux. I've used it a bit with my mac and iPhoto and I just drag the images out of iPhoto and drop them into JAlbum and it works pretty good. It's very easy to set up if you've got your own host someplace.

Re: How To: Upload Photos into EF

I have been using Picasa http://picasa.google.com/ to manage my photos. I find the basic editing tools very simple to use. I recently discoverd how to lower the resolution so that they take up less space. Seeing your comments, I guess that I should edit some of my first pictures. I uploaded these at their original size - very nice to look at but possibly taking up too much valuable space.

This site I use to store all of my pictures which I intend on linking to in various forums is photobucket. With a free account you get up to 1GB of storage with a monthly bandwidth of 140GB..!!

Re: How To: Upload Photos into EF

Hi Scott, well you know what colour hair I have so maybe you won't be surprised when I tell you I can't find A! (Damn now I got tooo smart for my own good and I can't even turn of the red, although some would say that that was appropriate, I hope I work it out by my next post as my mother always told me it was rude to write in red) Done it, wait that's blue.....
Back to the question in what ever colour it is. "Photos" has dissapeared from my screen, it is not there between Arcade and New posts.
Do you know where it's gone.
Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have computers.

The photo section of EF was broken when I upgraded the database and php software for EF in the last maintenance window. There are additional issues with the software and we chose to not continue with a photo album into the forseeable future. We recommend you post photos with services like Flickr, Picasa and jalbum.

Re: How To: Upload Photos into EF

That was a really helpful post Scott..........any chance of doing a little guided lesson on how to show a picture within one of my posts? that would be brill. All I seem to manage is those little thumbnail pics.......I WANT A BIG ONE ON SHOW, but I can't do it all by myself.....Gooner kindly gave my step by step instructions but I failed miserably.

Gooner will help you, but you first need to learn how to resize picture before you upload them as attachments.

You snake picture was so big, it didn't even fit on the screen.

Re: How To: Upload Photos into EF

I resize pictures using Picasa http://picasa.google.co.uk/

Use Export - Resize. I set resize to 640 pixels for general attachments.

There are various other ways of resizing pictures. I find this one easy.

You could use a (free) service like photobucket, just set up an account and you can upload pictures there and resize them as well if needed. Using photobucket instead of EF is better anyway because I believe they have only a limited amount of space on the EF's servers (more space = more costs).
