| | Navigating the English forum [Refining searches by City]
Hello to anyone who may be able to help.
This is not a complaint more a question. I am living and Zurich and most of the time when searching for things on the English forum I would prefer to see only the things for Zurich. Is there a way to filter the site so This is possible?
Cheers

HTH | | | | | How does that help - maybe I'm missing the "Location field" but I don't see it |

You put the key words you want in the box: dog biscuits zurich hassocks zurich
or whatever
It's all a bit moot as almost everything is about Zurich anyway. It's the rest of us who might like to filter Zurich out! |

If you restrict yourself to Zurich-based threads alone, you're going to be sorely disappointed .

Cheeky so and so edited his post after I'd started posting. | | | | | You can do search -zurich -zürich in the Google Powered search to exclude anything with those words in it.

This is basically "English Forum - Zürich" anyway
But seriously, you can learn a lot from all threads, even if they are not about your city specifically.

Basically what they said.
If you add "Zurich" (or "Zürich", or one of the many various ghettos of Zurich) to your search then;
Simple search : If Zurich (etc.) plus the term you're looking for is in the title or one of the thread tags then it'll find it. Simple search is a bit rubbish, but good if you just want a quick look for something quite common.
Advanced search : Like the simple search, but if the search words are used in the post text then you should find it. "Common" words and short words (three charaters or less; you know, irrelevant words like "tax", "RAV", "VAT", "dog", etc.) are ignored. Advanced search is better (especially if you want to restrict your search to certain date periods or sub-forums), but can sometimes be a bit rubbish.
Google search : Will find posts with the search words (or variations of them) anywhere in the webpage text - so you'd find posts about Zurich, but also anything posted by somebody with "Zurich" in their location or user name. Google search can be great; you have all the usual google widgets. But sometimes it tries to be too clever for its own bloody good. And if you want to find posts about "post" or "september" then you're buggered. So it can be a bit rubbish too sometimes.
After a bit you get the feel of which'll work best for a particular search.
So, in short; can you restrict your search by city/region? No. But sort of. But not very well.
E.T.A. - I'm being a bit harsh on google. Searches for "Post" and "September" both work as you'd (probably) want them to.

Hey everyone thanks for your replies!
Was laughing at the ones who wanted to exclude Zurich! I feel ya! I was more meaning for when I am looking to buy things second to filter it that way. Otherwise I am still interested in other things outside of Zurich!!! Now I know how thank you. |
