Reputation?

Did I always have a reputation? (I just saw the scale symbol)

how do i know if people are rating me badly and what nasty things they are saying about me!!!

uhm, and if it's anonymous, is it ok to rate other people badly just for fun?

how do I get more points to do rating?

I am soo easily entertained sometimes ...

I haven't really tweaked the reputation system yet, but you'll get limited points based on your numbers of posts and length of membership. Use them wisely - you don't get many.

Also, it's not good to rate people badly just for fun - would you like it if someone did that to you? Be fair to others and they'll be fair to you.

Reserve your bad rating for the real tossers

Re: Reputation?

I've made some small tweaks to the reputation system now. You should get a little bit more reputation-giving power than before. Remember that you can give positive or negative reputation by clicking on the little scale icon on each post. If you think the person wrote something good - give them positive reputation. If you think they are an idiot give them negative reputation.

Use your points wisely - they are not unlimited.

Re: Reputation?

Ok, now that the ranks are out of the way it's time to tweak the reputation system. Just so you know what the current settings are it works like this:

Default reputation: 10
Every 120 days you gain 1 point of reputation-altering power
For every 100 posts you gain 1 point of reputation-altering power
You must have 20 posts before you can affect other reputations
You must have 10 reputation points before you can affect other reputations
You can give or take reputation 3 times in any 24 period
You cannot give or take reputation from the same person twice, unless you have altered reputation for at least 5 other people in the meantime.

Use your reputation altering powers wisely! Enter a comment so that the person who received your judgement will know what it was for. They will be able to see such judgements in their control panel (my settings).

Reputation appears in the form of small green squares on the right hand side of your profile. Higher reputation - more squares. Do not confuse this with the ranking system (stars) which is purely calculated from the number of posts.

Do not bother giving me any points, they don't have any effect on me - save them for other people.

In part 2 - the current reputation ranks and titles and some ideas on new ones.

Re: Reputation?

I won't bother listing out the default settings for the reputation ranks because they are both stupid and impractical. I therefore propose the following:

(numbers indicated are minimum reputation to display this level)

-9999 (user) is considered unworthy
-15 (user) is considered a nuisance
-10 (user) has annoyed a few people around here
-5 (user) has become a little unpopular
-2 (user) has slipped a little
0 (user) has no particular reputation at present (default for new user)
2 (user) has made some interesting contributions
5 (user) has earned some respect
10 (user) is considered knowledgeable
20 (user) has earned the respect of many
30 (user) has an excellent reputation
50 (user) has a reputation beyond repute

Any comments? These are just things I made up off the top of my head...

Re: Reputation?

Ok, all of the adjustments have been made. Unfortunately since we now have a very small gap between some of those levels, the situation may arrive that some of the older and more prolific posters will end up with too much reputation-altering power.

I've therefore made some adjustments as follows:

Default reputation: 10
Every 180 days you gain 1 point of reputation-altering power
For every 150 posts you gain 1 point of reputation-altering power
You get an extra point of reputation-altering power for every 20 points of reputation.
You must have 20 posts before you can affect other reputations
You must have 10 reputation points before you can affect other reputations
You can give or take reputation 3 times in any 24 period
You cannot give or take reputation from the same person twice, unless you have altered reputation for at least 5 other people in the meantime.

Some questions and answers about the reputation system

How can I see how many reputation points I have?
Unfortunately you can't - unless you move the mouse over your reputation squares (little green ones) and see what it says. If you use the table above to figure it out you'll get an idea of the range, but not the exact number. I'll look at a way to change this.

How can I see how many points someone else has?
You can't see directly, but if you hover your mouse over the small green square in their profile or at the top of their messages the system will tell you about their reputation. These announcements are taken from the table further up this thread.

How can I alter someone else's reputation?
You don't alter their reputation per se - you simply agree or disagree with something they've written. You do this using the little scales icon on the header of a post. You should then give a reason why you agree or disagree with their post. They will be able to see the reason you gave, as well as your judgement.

How can I see who has altered my reputation?
If you have received any reputation it will be visible under "my settings". You'll also be able to see the post which the reputation applies to.

What if I have been unfairly rewarded or punished?
If you feel that you have received reputation unfairly, please notify an administrator or moderator via a PM (private message). They will investigate and take action if appropriate.

Can I enter into a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" arrangement?
Absolutely not. Posters who seem to give themselves reputation for their mutual benefit will find that their reputation scores will be lower than they might expect... See guidelines below on the appropriate use for this feature.

Guidelines on when to give reputation

Reputation stems from whether you agree or disagree with someone's post - not whether you have any personal feelings about that person. Try to stay objective and fair.

If the person wrote something insightful then reward them. Don't simply reward them because they agree with your point of view, or backed you up about something you wrote in a previous post.

Conversely, don't punish them just because they disagreed with you or wrote something you don't agree with. Try to be objective. Give them negative reputation if they overstepped some imaginary line of common sense or decency, or if they seem to be posting but adding little real value. Use judgement and common sense - you should know a poster that deserves negative reputation when you see them.

Forum staff will monitor reputation given, as well as the messages on which the reputation judgements are based. Any reputation which seems to be spiteful or contrary to these guidelines will be deleted and further action may be taken. Reputation given without a reason may also be deleted.

Adjustments to the reputation system

From time to time, depending on how the reputation system is used forum staff may make adjustments to the parameters which control it. This may mean that your reputation is recalculated based on different criteria and may then go higher or lower depending on the adjustments made.

Re: Reputation?

Actually pretty well all forums have some way of measuring the involvement of the participants even if it is only so they can measure the size of their blown out chests...

Well it's nothing like a role playing game. As forums get bigger they often have mechanisms to let the community do the policing instead of the staff. So far we haven't had that many bad apples arrive, but it will happen one day, believe me.

Nobody forces you to give reputation to others - but some people have asked for it so I've reconfigured the default settings to make a bit more sense. As for forums and games, check out how much time people around here spend in the arcade...
