Why people in this forum can be so rude!!!

I think the purpose of this forum is to help each other in this adventure of being in a different country, with a different culture, etc, not to make feel others like stupids.

Re: Why people in this forum can be so rude!!!

i've also noticed this... e.g. yesterday's thread on racism.
It is doubtful that such rudeness would occur when we meet someone, but behind safe anonymity we tend to be less reserved.
The added difficulty is that emails, blogs, bulletin boards are 1-way static communication that loses the nuances of face-to-face. i just have to think for a moment how i've changed course mid-sentence when i sense discomfort or misunderstanding...

at the end of the day though, this is "our" space, "our" community and (with the help of the moderators) we need to let post-ers know when they've crossed the line of acceptable behavior. I've seen this done with "groans" for example.

Re: Why people in this forum can be so rude!!!

Oh, it helps people alright. Big style. But those that help often indulge themselves in a little fun at the expense of the stupids...

So you can either join in, have fun and marvel at the wonder of the collective brains, or get upset and miss out on a great information source.

As regards your enquiry, people have gone to more trouble than you have to answer it, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth, or next time they won't.

Given your mood, the guy didn't want to be found ? We should be told.

Ah yes, but would you ask the kinds of questions some people ask on this board in real life? I doubt that too.

This discussion has been done over and over and over and over again. If it was all that bad, there would not be quite so many users and you really can't please everyone.

And I dare say that the discussion will continue over and over again because there is always an influx of new people, and they'll always have the same reaction. The problem is that it gets old quickly and if you've been around for a while, your patience wears thin, your responses are short and impatient, and new people who haven't a clue what this is about feel that veterans are indeed quite rude. So you can't please everyone so you might as well just please yourself.

But I would add that not everyone has a tough skin. And it's not the purpose of this forum to teach us to grow one.

Re: Why people in this forum can be so rude!!!

I think the issues surrounding this thread are that Newmarie asked for ways to find a person in order to contact them and was suggested to use www.directories.ch

The question about head office of Swatch was also addressed in that thread. It was easily found using Google (or even www.swatch.com).

Newmarie then proceeded to post a new thread asking if someone works at Swatch in order to find out if someone works there. The advice was something along the lines of "here's the number, call and ask for the person".

Many on this forum will only help people who appear to try to help themselves. If someone shows no desire to do anything for themselves bar ask the EF Massive, should the EF Massive be held accountable for some sarcasm?

It's not about making people feel welcome in a new country. Nobody actually called Newmarie stupid - but Google is so easy to use and gives good results and people like to feel that a person has tried a little before giving up.

People cannot help others if others cannot help themselves.

We haven't had this in a while.

"Google is your friend"

Saying all this "Lob et al" you have to consider (shocking I know) that their are people that can just about turn a pc on and still type with one finger. I think you understand what i'm getting at.

I know we're not a PC help service but then again a little tolerance now and again from the Vets might go a long way into keeping things friendly.

Probably need a overhaul of the help section stickies aswell

That is just an extra service we offer for free.

But as Lob has already said. The OP's original thread has numerous replies which are as useful and helpful as can be expected from a group of complete strangers. The thread then complied with the basic forum tradition of descending into a little silliness after 5-10 usefull responses.

I'm talking about people who give the impression that, no matter what information you've given them, they still need more and have not acted and refuse to act.

If someone gives the impression that they can be bothered, I can say that I will make effort too. I believe I've done this for the whole time I've been on EF (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

Expect others to put in no more effort than you have put into forming or answering your question yourself.

I am surprised the OP didn't ask us to go round to Yves and ask him out on your behalf for a fish supper (and never call him again).

Re: Why people in this forum can be so rude!!!

An appropriate forum song can illustrate perhaps:

Don't go changing to try and please me,
You never let me down before.
And don't imagine you're too familiar,
And I don't see you anymore.

I don't want clever conversation,
I never want to work that hard.
I just want someone that I can talk to,
I want you just the way you are.

I suppose it would be rude to mention that proof reading might be a good idea when posting a new thread?

OK - you've asked. Now you've complained. But have you helped?

maybe we should all (including mods) consider before replying that we are adding value to the thread concerned? We are almost all guilty of it.

There are so many threads that have been dragged down in a never-ending spiral.

If we don't have something useful, nice and polite to say then we should reconsider clicking on that Submit button.

Newmarie would've perhaps just thought that nobody knew rather than everyone ripping into her (I assume Newmarie is a she). Then maybe someone slightly less jaded than some of us are with the approach would post a nice reply (www.directories.ch) and help Newmarie.

She has a serious point as many are put off the forum by the welcome, the ripping and the intent some forum members have to drag everything they post on into the ground.
