I'm curious to know what "total groans" actually refers to.
It's the number of times you've groaned at posts. In your case it lists just the one, back in 2007, although no groan is actually showing on the post in question, so your 'no groans' claim stands.

It seems that the count isn't decremented if the post/user who you groaned at gets deleted.

My stats say I've groaned twice, but only list one post. Which is odd, I'm not big on groaning, but I thought I had groaned more than twice. Perhaps it decrements properly if a post gets deleted, but not the user... or 'tother way around.

TBF to Tom, he dishes out thanks and groans in equal(ish) measure, and uses them much more like they were originaly intended, just like thumbs up/down or like/dislike on some social media platforms. For some reason groans on EF have come to be taken as much more personal and serious than they perhaps should be.

In your case the second groaned post was 'soft-deleted' (mods and admins can still view them), as are 99% of deletions, so the groan is still in the system.

This seems to be a trend. A forum which I moderate runs on Discourse Discourse has no groans, only "thanks".

In the grand scheme of things, neither groans nor thanks make a big difference:
Quote:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, donít deal in lies,
Or being hated, donít give way to hating,
And yet donít look too good, nor talk too wise:

According to my stats:

Total Groans: 1
Groaned at 42 Times in 27 Posts
Find all groaned at posts by Reb77Br
Find all posts groaned by Reb77Br

Clicking on "Find all posts groaned by Reb77Br" produces no results. Of course, I could have groaned at someone once and they deleted their post. But I'm pretty sure I haven't groaned at anyone, on principle. Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect that "Total groans" is a kind of summary representation of "groaned at posts" and "posts groaned by".

Well, that's odd. When I check out your groan history, Reb77Br, I see that you dished out a groan (just the one) to user gavin1966 on 27.06.2007. Unsurprisingly, it was in a thread about "financial advisor" spam calls. Here's a screenshot of the post, complete with your groan.

Wierd. And I don't mean the lack of a screenshot (edit- that you've fixed now) but that I had looked at that very 'groaned' post on two separate occasions and no groan was shown. But now it is, whether from your link or the way I navigated to it before.

Definitely when posts or threads get deleted, thanks and groans still stand.

So over time you should actually have a higher count of both thanks and groans than can actually be accounted for.

I don't know if the mods can still see deleted posts, or whether there is some dark corner of the system where they languish on, or whether the counter is actually independent.

I used to visit what I understood was the sister site to EFS, Toytown Germany, but gradually visited less and eventually stopped altogether after the previously friendly atmosphere deteriorated. They didn't originally have red tags or green tags for posts, but once these were introduced and a number of regular posters disappeared, posts started being marked down just to indicate disagreement with the opinion expressed. So someone could go to the bother of starting a discussion topic and the original post could end up with a negative red mark just because a handful of people disagreed. The message seemed to be that they'd be better off not posting at all. I had and still have the impression that this is essentially a friendly board, with groans usually being reserved for particularly egregious breaches of what is normally considered acceptable social behaviour, e.g. for racism.

On an unrelated note, I see now that size limits have mysteriously been imposed not only for avatars, but also for attachments to posts. Storage must be getting expensive in Sweden.

I had to resize my screenshot to comply with our overlords' requirements.

Maybe the clue is in the word.

If you're in a pub and somebody makes a statement you disagree with, you might groan.

If the person makes a terribly and unnacceptably vile racist statement and announced he was going to mow down kittens with a machine gun, you wouldn't groan, but you'd shout him down or walk out or smash a beer bootle over his head.

Maybe the forum needs buttons for smashing beer bottles so that groans can go back to being what they are supposed to be.

I'm not surprised if deleted posts from 2007 are still stored on the servers (like the one Reb77Br groaned and you were able to dig out)

No doubt you will call me naive but I kind of expect a post of mine that I deleted to be deleted. Like evaporated.
After all, the deleted stuff from EF (by mods or by posters themselves) will not be needed for historic purposes in 1000 years ..... or will it? LOL.

Best is to assume you will only use reading rights when deleting a post on a server which is not yours.

I didn't complain about it being mine or not. What I meant was that I'm not surprised they run out of server-space if they keep even the deleted stuff for 10 years and more.

Forum posts don't take up much space, so the space penalty using soft delete isn't really an issue. Uploaded photos, otoh....

The site I moderate migrated from a text only platform to one which allows photos in posts. We migrated 1.8 million posts to the new site. Our backup has grown from about 3GB to 30GB in roughly a year, this tenfold growth is almost exclusively uploads.

I'm only having a giggle. I agree that some people take the thanks/groans far too seriously on here. I just use them in place of a pointless 1 word reply agreeing with the post in question, or where I would roll my eyes/tut in real life, so they're not a personal insult.
