Stupid Groans

Where to report unwanted groans?

It is absolutely ridiculous in this topic

https://www.englishforum.ch/leaving-...ml#post2842855

Or should we just accept the fact that if people don't like the facts they can just give you an amount of groans which over time will make one look like a dumbass?

Who cares what people who only look at your groan/thank iconettes say?

I pay more attention to the content people post, I don't need a survey of other people's opinion, or a quick graphical display to recognize if a poster is generally running on all cylinders.

You're alright Edwin, don't let it get to you.

I remember when EF had no groans (or thanks). It was very tedious as we had to be extra rude to make like a groan then...

I wil not take it to the dining table or to bed, nor will I bring these topics up if I would join a bunch of you for a beer, and I will even ignore all the groans on such days. Can we hand out paper thanks and groans tho on meet ups so people have to wear them on their shirt, for saying great or dumb things in the bar. If so remind me to buy bigger shirts...

However if a site implements such system and even state somewhere that excessive groaning will be dealt with I expect some form of moderation on it, if not than just put those lines of codes in comments and get rid of the whole system since it clearly reflects nothing more than a joke.

As hard as it sometimes may be, I'd like to do the mods the favour of sort of living up to the dream they have of a friendly forum without cursing, I can play the friendly yet sucking game to try to make the other party take it to bed and ruin his evening, but this is incredible annoying for all the others, and serves no other purpose than to admit someone is doing a good job on annoying you.

So what's left?

Re: Stupid Groans

This JS code will strip out thanks and groans below a post. Either run it as a bookmarklet or build it into an extension (and maybe offer it here to others). You'll find EF is much nicer with it:

var strip = function(d, type){var elems = d.querySelectorAll('div[id^="post_' + type + '_box_"]');var stripThanksGroan = function(el) {el.style.display = "none";}; Array.prototype.forEach.call(elems, stripThanksGroan); }; strip(document, 'thanks'); strip(document, 'groan');

That´s how it is. We still have trolls, fluffers, "I groan at everyone" or "I thank everyone" people.

Not much to be done about it

Re: Stupid Groans

Looking at your statistics, you gave more groans (35) than you received (28).

Sooo, it's ok to dish them out but you open a thread to complain when you get them.

trainspotter has made some interesting contributions
Re: Stupid Groans

The same question was asked in facebook (specifically about not having dislike button) for years.. so until they came with "reactions icons", their official excuse was "A dislike felt very binary to Mark and the team.".

In reality, the main reason was avoiding developing negative and destructive community. In psychology when these things occur (especially at higher scale) they might have direct effect on people, especially all-day-users / teenagers / vulnerable ppl etc and at best, it can be the end of facebook because people will start to avoid it because they cant express their feelings anymore without being attacked; so it was kept like: I like it let it be a click, I dont like it, lets move on to someones else status.

Maybe the best would be adding Thanks only, and in future making the post with most thanks at top (like twitter, top tweets vs per time or event like facebook comments, most likes gets up to top of comments)
