This is a hangover from the very early days when Thanks were intended for meaningful information pertaining to the fora about life in Switzerland.

Off Topic didn't even exist. In fact, it was created by popular demand and pro-active way of keeping rubbish out of the, what were intended to be wholly constructive areas of the forum. It was a place where nothing meaningful to the original intention of the forum (all the crap) could reside. Since it was not in-keeping with intention of the forum it was decided that no Thanks (or Groans) should be made available.

Mark, ever the idealistic and positive founder of EF thought that members would be grown-up enough to dole out Thanks (which in turn existed long before Groans - which were an experiment in human nature and would prove our propensity for childishness) and Groans accordingly and in a meaningful manner.

Although very convenient and they were used to genuinely give Thanks and Groans, they're mostly about gratification, sniping, virtual back-rubbing and trolling. They have no real value, mostly.

The orignal Thanks system was to encourage meaningful posting and to add to the validity and reputation of helpful contributors. In that context there shoud be no Thanks on off-topic as it was to be a meaningless playground for those who had nothing to offer but plenty of time to squander.

Since the primary the objective of the forum now is to generate clicks, then yes, open up activity potential all over the forum and let members have their intra-daily dose of virtual monkey-chow kibbles in the way of feel-good Thanks (or rotten Groans) being drip-fed down the pipe.

See what I did there? I thanked your post although its not the tiniest bit about life in Switzerland...

Re: No thanks to DB?

If I can't thank a post (sometimes I read them too late) and I want to recognise someone's contribution, I'll give green rep instead.

I've not used groan or given any red rep in the 6 years I've been an EF'er.

Re: No thanks to DB?

I rarely use groans and red blobs.

I will thank a post on a thread where the person has asked a question and there have been useful responses, as I feel it helps to identify who the helpful posters are.

I will also try to remember to thank those who have responded to a thread I have started looking for info. I will also try to remember to reply with anything else I have subsequently found out via my own digging.

Sadly there is a significant handful of keyboard jockeys on this forum who would rather fill a thread with sniping at newbies than just posting something useful. Consequently when I do search the EF for something I have to sift through a few pages of <automoderated>hole comments often from the same few people to get what I want.

Cheers,
Nick

You do know that there is an "ignore list" feature? If it's the same people that annoy you just put them on there and by default don't see their crap anymore.

I for example only read omtatsat's posts if I really positively think I am interested in a thread...

Being a non-FB-person (=not part of the "likes-generation"), the thanks button has different meanings for me.
It can be "I agree", "thanks for the info", "didn't know that, glad you mentioned it", "very clever" and very often "thanks, you made me smirk/giggle/laugh out loud".
Same - but then, I see the groan button as just the opposite (e.g. could be I disagree, I think the post is very stupid, or I just wonder why the hell you’d post something like that). I’m fairly amazed by the amount of pain and suffering some people seem to take from groans.

Back to the OP, I’ve noticed the same, and it’s a minor annoyance, but nothing that keeps me up at night.

Thats what I'm saying. Let's stop pretending this is a sophisticated cocktail party and accept and celebrate our Roman orgy-esque propensity with Thanks and Groans everywhere.

Grazie e Gemiti per tutti!
If it's a Roman orgy, can we have an "oooooh" button as well?

Re: No thanks to DB?

No thanks button??......then I just give rep, according to the posts content, helpfulness and whateverelse is important to me to react to it, I can chose 1-5 blobbies and give my thanks even more finely tuned than just a general ‚thumbs up‘

Meanwhile the rest of us have to work (cough cough) to earn that rep.
