I only once had a text corrected by a mod - ages ago - and it changed the meaning. So I politely informed that I changed it back again. All fine.
Me, too.

Trust me, it is "die Macht" in this construction in German. Thats why I am sure that you didnt send me those PMs in the past: You might have the attitude, but you simply lack the skills. Sorry.
You're absolutely correct, I don't have "the skills". In German.

My English skills are quite adequate, though. Not so much my typing, occasionally.

But just to satisfy my curiosity and correct my ignorance, you're saying that when writing in German "in (the case of) 'power', 'Macht' is written with a capital 'M'", you would follow 'im Falle' with 'die Macht'; is that correct?

Yes that too. But "Die Macht" (substantive feminin) is written in capitals, z.B. die Macht der Mächtigen.
Sure. Nobody is disputing that.

Yes, because typos due to over-zealous auto-correct and grammatical/syntactical failures are exactly equivalent.
So give other people the same leeway, the same benefit of the doubt, before criticising them for not rigorously checking what they write, that you are asking of them.

I will never point out errors in anyone's writing -- with one exception. Those who moan about the accuracy of other people's writing are fair game.

Check Skitt's Law, Muphry's Law, and so on.

Is this an example of good writing -- the sort at which I am "not particularly good"? Or is it supposed to be an example of the application of Skitt's law?

Anyway, I do give people a lot of leeway here on EF and in my personal life, but not professionally, where accuracy is essential and where my English language skills have miraculously and inexplicably provided a pretty decent living for me and my family for quite some time now. Leeway for simple typos having been given, it's perfectly reasonable to correct a much broader error to improve the comprehensibility of a post on EF. That's what the mod in question did.

Well, since I started it, can I also close it?

I did not use EF over the weekend and found the PM this morning about my post change and thought "WTF?". Maybe I should have had some coffee first and let it all go, but I decided to make a short post. Maybe it wasnt worth to be annoyed about. But I think I did not make an unreasonable post.

Within ten minutes did I get some replies by several mods ganging up on me that frankly surprised me in tone and content. The replies were rude, personal and at least borderline insulting. Clearly is criticism not accepted. The most ironic part was when those mods then asked everyone else repeatedly to be less sensitive...

Happy to see the replies of all others and that EF still have a somewhat lively community.

Have a good day!

Yep. Much like those funny parties that Germans enjoy.

Enough for today. Treverus has made his point, others have made theirs, and EF has enjoyed another storm in a water glass.

Re: Over moderation

Dear Treverus,

I sincerely apologize that I have upset you so much with the edit. It was not a comment on your overall English skills or some sort of trick to embarrass you. However I can see that without any additional context or a specific PM from me to explain, it might come across that way.

Hindsight being delightfully 20/20, a better choice would have been to PM you with an explanation and to suggest you edit the post yourself.

I do not edit users' posts to annoy them or make fun of them. Like most users, if I want to be a bit playful I might quote and do a "FTFY" type of statement with a smiley or wink.

I had no idea it would be such a hot-button issue, or that it would come across to you as being a personal attack. That certainly wasn't my intent. All I wanted to do was help. I also realize now that I the Vollgeld initiative thread on the brain, where I thought it was important to make the distinction between borrow and lend.

If you have any other questions or concerns about this matter or any other, do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Best regards,
3Wishes

Re: Over moderation

Ooohhh, late to the party, am I..

Members, mods included, contribute and respond according to their availability and good will. Nobody should feel obligated to respond when unavailable or if the invitation to communicate isn't actually presented with a good will to communicate. Polite requests usually always see a reply sooner or later, which is a sign of a healthy community. The replies will also try to be genuine and diverse, which gets more or less tolerated, depends on the topic. People will drop communication if it turns aggressive or into a pissing contest, attempt to ridicule the opponent, etc.

As for the in-post editting and the OP...I have a feeling my colleague did not do it with an ill intention.

Edit - I see I just cross posted with my colleague, good to see their explanation here, too.

Of course, some moderate moderation (in Schengen zone), is always in place ...

The European Commission (aka EF) has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi TU understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.

And Congratulations you have learnt German within minutes...```
I see a good mod candidate. Love the deciphering process, keeps our membership thinking out of the box.
