Re: Delete account

Every website that requires you to register should allow you to permanently delete your account.

Yes I know that permanently is a bit of wishful thinking with archives and backups, etc., but your data should be removed, on request, from active data bases.

When something is free, your are not the customer you are the product.

I think when you sign up there is something in the T&Cs that gets around it. If you sign up, you basically agree.

Golden rule is not to post anything dodgy.

That's BS. Think about things like GDPR and the right to be forgotten.

Well, maybe that's the key. Think before your write any "BS" that's going to come back to bite you further down the line, and don't rely on what seems to be extremely difficult legislation to implement.

Prevention is always better than the cure.

Come on guys think a little... GDPR is now a serious piece of legislation that ALL companies worldwide with EU dealings are now having to comply with, T&C's cannot override it, thelocal is not a Swiss company and neither is our data hosted here.

If we want our accounts deleted I would say it is at least possible that this can be done under EU legislation with a formal request. It would be useful if the mods could ask Editor Bob to give a formal reply on this.

If we want our accounts deleted I would say it is a safe bet this can be done under EU legislation with a formal request. It would be useful if the mods could ask Editor Bob to give a formal reply on this.
Didn't happen back in May so probably not...

There have been a very few cases where accounts have been totally removed, but none for reasons of GDPR, as far as I'm aware.

I think that pretty much covered it, nothing's changed since. (Threads now merged)

Here's a summary of what we (mods) normally do in cases like this one, some actions dependent on the user's preference.

Rename the account to something pseudo-random.
Change the password likewise.
Change the registration email address.
Permanently ban the account.

Here what we don't normally do, and why.
Remove posts - these are now effectively anonymous, so unless personal details have been included (in which case we edit/delete on an individual basis) they remain, but attributed to the new user name. Systematic removal of old posts would risk losing valuable information in threads and replies thereby affected.
Remove registration and posting IP addresses. Without any identifying personal details there is no link between the IP address used and the individual(s) using it, so it isn't personal information.

Re: Someone to keep an eye on Mk. 2

Is there a way to not only delete an account so that posts show up as 'guest', but also to delete all a user's posts as well, invoking GDPR?

I thought I remember a discussion on this, but can't seem to find that now.
