The Local wanting cash

Ha ha ha!

Clicked on a The Local link on the EF website and got a popup demanding payment to read further.

Another reason not to read their dire articles.

Cheers,
Nick

Seems to be (for me on a smartphone anyway) any story marked ‘For members’. The other stories can be accessed.

Re: Local wanting cash

I've used thelocal.ch and before that it was the .at site. Considering the articles are mostly a day late translation of actual news sites with content missing and no expat view added, I will not be paying to see the content.
The other articles are puff pieces by ameteur journalists telling you all about how it is to live in the country where they all borrowed their homework from the previous person.
I'd be suprised if many sign up for it.

As it's Friday: I'm surprised that people on this forum don't seem to understand that quality journalism costs money.

People still see adverts? Why aren't you using adblocker+ghostery?

I've seen news sites moving to cryptomining for money (little client side script makes them money as you browse/read)

If they had a record of either quality or journalism that might be an argument for the paywall.
I've used it for when I feel lazy and don't want to read in German, now I'll just read in German and stick articles in google translate when feeling extra lazy.
Or I could create my own site, google translate 2 articles a day, clean them up and ask people to pay me on top of whatever advertising revenue I'm getting. If somebody came on here asking if this would be a valid business idea, they would be crucified.

I'm surprised it's taken people this long to notice. They had an article up for at least two weeks in March, warning that articles were going behind a paywall.

I'm surprised that anyone's noticed at all

I think I even put the local's banner ads in my adblocker, so I don't even see the headlines and links.

You have no ideas what it means to be a reporter. The poor The Local reporters traveling all around the world for some low salary, in hazardous areas, disasters, war zones, and you don't even want to make a small contribution?

These articles are generally only late because they have to be sent back to The Local headquarters with unorthodox measures, like smoke signals, pigeons, morse code etc. You have no idea how difficult it is to find a smoke signal translator nowadays.

Oh god, how could I not have seen it. I didn't realise they had to go to Basel Stadt on an annual trip, the inhumanity of it all.
Not to mention the war zone that is Zürich when they reported on the planned terrorist attack on a crowded city square where the perpetrators packed a cultural art installations head full of explosives. Thanks to the authorities they erected barriers in time.

Yes, Sweden is a terribly dangerous country. Not fit for journalists.
