Ad framework consume 100% CPU if you don't have adblock

Hello, I am perhaps the last one not using adblock on this planet. Since a long time I simply cannot open englishforums on mac because the page hangs frying the cpu.

Today I just took a snapshot of the web resources and added randomly some filters in my /etc/hosts to remove bloatware. I got it finally working, and so I am able to post this message

My file:
#fix englishforums 127.0.0.1 adserver.adtechus.com 127.0.0.1 sshowads.pubmatic.com 127.0.0.1 pixel.onaudience.com 127.0.0.1 google-analytics.com 127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com 127.0.0.1 s1.adform.net 127.0.0.1 tpc.googlesyndication.com 127.0.0.1 track.adform.net 127.0.0.1 adform.net 127.0.0.1 cdn.ampproject.org 127.0.0.1 mc.yandex.ru

My Mac which blocks nothing on EF has no problem at all.

How old is yours and what model is it?

That's sounds like a typical Apple-fan response, next you'll tell me to buy a new mac. Sorry for pun

Better question is what's the software version. I have the latest updates. Zero plugins in my Safari. As for the mac, it's i5 2.9Gh, can handle web browsing without issues typically consuming 5 to 30% cpu, depending on the web content.

If you don't have problems, than that's weird, but it's clearly the ad content which I blocked by the hosts file which cause the issue. I don't know how analyze it better as when the page hungs the safari web developer tools are unresponsive too. I bet something is causing infinite loops, perhaps some js exception.

So, erm... why not just use an adblocker?

I just don't care about the ads Apple don't allow unsigned plugins in Safari since a long time.

All Apple here - iMac, iPhone, iPad - no ad blocker, not problem.

Try Firefox. Faster internet connection...

Sounds like a time to do system refresh, install everything from scratch. I must have some issue then, perhaps some malware but removing SIP now to debug it seems even dangerous.

Thanks!

Used daily. Never switched off, except when away on holiday - only sleep at night.

Mojave version 10.14.4
iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Had the exact same issue, using (latest) Linux/Ubuntu and Firefox, on an up-to-date machine.
Throwing away all cookies was sufficient to get rid of the issue.

Adblockers work on Safari https://www.google.com/search?q=adbl...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Not using them is just silly in this day and age.

Yes without is a pain in the arse. Get adblock from Apple App store for Safari But use Chrome. Safari is primitive.

Ad Block Plus created problems with Safari. I think Apple just does not like people to use Adblockers. But that's normal for Apple

Actually I think Apple doesn’t like any program that collect too much of their customers data. There are also those who are not prepared to pay Apple’s 30% commission on sales made at their store.

They don’t restrict you if you want to buy elsewhere. Even with security as tight as they make it, you can always override it.

Thanks for so many advices but ads don't bother me in general. When it takes to web efficiency the analytics and social media trackers are much bigger issue. But yes, Apple made a huge improvement in that regard, on other browser ads can be really annoying. Nonetheless, there are web sites which I prefer to purify, for that task my best tool is Brave browser, brave.com
