Re: Ideas for making constructive posts on a forum [thread split]]

I have read the thread (well the last 6-7 pages) that this one was split from and I fail to see what the target of this post said that offended so many people. The discussion was about whether non-citizens should vote or not and people had different opinions as usual. Then, as soon as MC mentioned "neg repping" (which, by the way, I have no clue about, where do you rep or neg rep people?) all hell seems to have broken loose. It sounds the real issue has little to do with this thread but it has been boiling over for some time.

I also do not understand why the OP in this thread made such a big deal about the intelligibility of MC's posts. To my knowledge she is not a native speaker, so should be cut some slack. As to the alleged arrogance in her posts, I don't know if her posts are more arrogant that 90 of the posts written by forum regulars.

Also, what is the abuse of power that occurred? Is it the banning of a certain user who has since passed away? Or was it about our personal details? Why does the unease about the users' personal details fall on this mod and not the others? Is it because she banned the wrong people or because her tongue is sharp?

It's not only that thread, Kedi. There were other things that bottled up and led to this shit fest nobody is comfortable with.

Except that's not what's done. Mods say they don't moderate when they participate but posters keep ignoring this ... claim or fact, whichever applies, but when they do paricipate they presumably want to be seen as ordinary posters, void of mod privileges in that thread.

If posters (also) made the distinction, and assuming mods adhered to it, this kind of discussion would be completely futile. These threads wouldn't even exist in the first place. Yet they keep coming up. So, to kind of make mods adhere to it, where that's seen as appropriate (let mods decide amongst themselves), they could create a dupe account.

Ordinary members wouldn't even need to know (wink, wink)
I don't know, maybe it's different for me moderating a forum with a smaller team. There are only 3 moderators and the other two don't participate that much in discussions while I join in whenever I feel like - but always mindful that I am a moderator. They have real lives while I'm retired so am on the forum from 7am until 11pm most days, which also makes me much more visible to the membership than they are. I do hold back from some discussions/arguments because if I did let fly as I'd sometimes like to I'd get hauled over the coals by our admin - and rightly so imho. I gave up that privilege when I agreed to be a moderator. I don't think you can pick and choose which discussions you're moderating and which ones you're not.

Kedi, the Thanks and Groan buttons provide rep and negative rep respectively. Some users have consistently groaned other users to make their rep negative and occasionally vice versa.

Uhm ... nope.
Positive and negative reps are handed out by hitting the scale-icon on top right of the message.

Kedi, the green ones are positive. Use those or don't bother

Re: Ideas for making constructive posts on a forum [thread split]]

Actually I had a good look yesterday and figured out that I myself have been given 25 reputation adjustments and that you can do it by clicking on the scales icon on the top right corner of a post. I cannot believe it took me slmost 10 years to figure this out

My blobs are mostly green but I saw there is one who called me 'Chuff's autistic sister'. I am not bothered though: I expected nothing less from him.

I don't care if my reputation is in tatters though. I am just trying to understand if this thread is fair or if it is people ganging up on someone. I still give them the benefit of the doubt though as I am not around that often and I might have missed something.

Maybe someone can summarize MC"s offences for the likes of me in bullet points (It really is difficult to read an A4 lengty text) and we can see if they are serious offences that we should worry about or minor transgressions.

As someone else pointed out, reputations are different then groans/thanks. If you go to your control panel and scroll down you will see the reps together with comments in a list. I cannot believe I never saw them in 10 years.

NO ! It is not for any one of us to list ANYBODY’s offenses and then crucify them, 20 to 1 on a public forum.
Who in the hell do we think we are?

I’ve sent this thread to Editor Bob.
His job to decide what should be done (if anything).

Of course it was you. I am just dissapointed that the term 'autistic' was used as an insult.

Yeah, I wouldn't do that now. But still, you definitely deserved the negative rep. You know why.

I am just trying to be fair to MC. With the mention of security breaches and all that, the content of this thread is much more harmful as it is.

Still, threads like this are good for the post count, regardless of content. Gotta keep those adverts coming in, even if the forum is in terminal decline!

When I discovered what he blobs are, I checked a few people to see how their reputations were. I checked your username to see if you have a bad rep and indeed you have a terrible one. I should also check st2lemans but I am on my phone now.

It would be good if the reps were open for viewing. This would probably cause people to refrain from giving red ones right and left in addition to providing the readers more entertainment.
