Seriously, somebody upon high should be doing something about this. This is an illegal act and everyone is just sitting back and chuckling about it.

The person's email and therefore probably name is known, it can't be that difficult to contact her and tell her to desist or face prosecution.
Come on now .. If the person has gone to the bother of using a VPN, do you think they have used a real name and address when they registered a fake account on EF?

This is just childish fun, there's no way the cops would be interested and if the EF has any sense, they'd disclose nothing without a court order.

The simple answer is to ignore it.. All of your accounts are being probed everyday, from your bank to your interconnected washing machine. It's just life online.

I thought after 5 attempts there was a block?
Why do you think she is using different IP's

Not quite true, this only begun happening after the original "real" account, Plumtree was banned. Ever since then, as soon as an alt got banned, hacking starts.

Hopefully Plumtree was enough of a plum (and a long term proper user) to sign up with actual credentials the first time.
I still very much doubt that they have committed any crime worth caring about..
"Accidentally entering the wrong username in the login box and failing to login" isn't really a crime ..

Even if they manage a successful login and write something on your behalf, the effort to prove it and prosecute it would be silly compared to any benefit to society.

It's a million miles away from being worth the cops time.. In my humble opinion. as a network security specialist

A campaign to ignore the login attempts would be a more suitable punishment

I'm sure that, given enough resources, police could find the original incarnation and that they'd have a fair chance of showing some connections with the VPNs being used for these hacking attempt.

The question is, does the attempted, never successful, hacking of individual user accounts on a minor discussion forum represent enough of a threat to Swiss or World order for them to allocate the team of investigators that would be required to do so?

Re: Failed Login hacker attempt

Yep, have a proper password and just ignore it or have fun about it. Somebody like StirB clearly showing he is upset is like asking an artist for another song.

I got like 10 of those mails the last 24h, so that is 50 attempts minimum, if somebody wants to spend their time manually trying passwords be my guest. (Tho I doubt it actually is even real attempts, more random shit for the mails) and seeing the big amount of attention it gets here. EF is like a heaven for trolling.

If somebody knows what they are doing and avoids mistakes police simply have no chance.

Also it is not worth their time imho.

Re: Failed Login hacker attempt

take a look at your firewall logs on your home pc / router, as soon as you connect to the internet you're being bombarded with hacking attempts, some muppet has just found some 'hacking' scripts and is having some 'fun', everyone else thinks they are a little bit sad, but whatever.

It's clearly not some random muppet though, is it?
its also clearly not someone who really knows what they are doing either, otherwise they'd be going for the server / forum software, just send the emails to your spam folder

She might be knowing about what she is doing and how to do that in a for her safe way, but beyond any doubt she has much less knowledge than whatever random scriptkiddy.

We did? I can’t even remember. I never thought I attacked anyone on this board (or IRL &#128513. Would you mind showing me the exchange?
It was a perfectly pleasant exchange if I remember rightly, you definitely didn’t get on the wrong side of her but it was probably enough for her to remember your username.

Especially with the ancient version of VBB running here
I guess it's just not worth hitting for anything other than a bit of fun.

99% of a forum is public anyways, the rest is likely just drivel ..
The only prize would be unhashing the passwords (assuming they are hashed) and hoping for some re-usable stuff.

Re: Failed Login hacker attempt

21 x 5 on me this morning alone.
I couldn’t give a toss about them personally but it could be considered to be harassment.

Wow.

We shouldn't disclose the gender of posters, either.

Hope things calm down asap.
If you’d paid attention to what happens day to day on here instead of endlessly philosophising and points scoring you’d know how this person operates.

She has made her gender patently obvious so nobody is disclosing anything.

It’s day to day (three words).
