It's generally not a good idea to publicly share with hackers that you know what they are up to, so the thread was moved.

Re: Another hacking attempt

There's been lots of others had attempts at hacking their accounts, of course we all know who it is. Almost impossible that they will be able to guess any passwords, maybe they think that if there are enough failed attempts that the users here will have their accounts locked - which won't happen of course. Very sad, and I'm feeling a bit left out because they haven't tried it on me!

On the other hand it is very useful to alert other members to the fact that there is a potential hacker on the loose.

This is obviously correct, raising awareness is absolutely key in these situations, as is changing your passwords to something stronger and more complex just to be safe (if you are in doubt if its strong enough), which is why I am wondering what the heck 3Wishes is talking about with that bizarre statement.

Unless she is the hacker of course.

Re: Another hacking attempt

Fair question. I can see why it would be unclear if you never saw the original thread.

Every thread on the open boards here can be read by any person on the planet. That includes whoever is trying to hack into people's accounts. In the original thread, people were listing IP addresses that were being used for the hack attempts.

Nothing like telling the potential hacker hey, don't use these IPs, come up with some more! And they have.

Admins are aware of these attacks and are blocking IPs as we learn about them and report them, but there is no easy blanket way to block every attempt.

Chuff is correct, by now everyone should know to have strong passwords and not to use the same password on multiple sites.

Personally, I think this attack is intended to annoy the crap out of our members by overwhelming their inboxes, not to actually gain access to the accounts. So far, the person or persons responsible are achieving that goal.

Hey, the waste more of their own time than ours. But it's good to have a hobby.

I very much doubt the the person in question has any idea of which IP they are using, they have a vpn that randomly assigns an IP based on a chosen location and if one doesn’t work they just choose another.
I’m pretty sure they’re not keeping a check list of IP addresses used and cross referencing them with the ones published on threads on here.
It’s really easy to change IP addresses.

Speak for yourself, I wasted a hell of a lot of my time listing all the IP addresses used to try to hack my account and that was on Sunday alone, there are a hell of a lot more of them that have been received since then.

Not having the threads visible achieves nothing as it is no problem to change IP's using software, the best defence against whichever sad and lonely ex-member is doing this is to have everyone aware of the issue and for Editor Bob to send out a communication to Swiss users asking them to change their passwords to something more secure. Passwords should be a minimum of 8 characters including all of the following:
  1. Capital letters
  2. Small letters
  3. Numbers
  4. Special characters

Example: (but please obviously do not use this example password): Password1234!

Even better if you mix them up a little or substitute letters for numbers (though it is harder to remember) like pAssW0rd!1234

The last laugh is with those people that have a dump email account for log-ins and other such dead emails, though...

I just switched off the notifications of that email address and filtered them to the junk folder.

the rule is; if you can remember your password, then your password is not good enough .

don't worry hackers only use binary, so don't use Tom 01 10 11 100 as a passord.

The first thing hackers try are always the stupid things precisely because a large proportion of the worlds population are either not so sensible or barely IT literate.
