Re: Mixed messages: EF deletion of posts

I mainly joined EF as I had a blog site I was trying to raise up the Google stats, and my posts used to have the site URL in the signature - much to the chagrin of one former mod who used to delete my posts almost as a sport.

We had already been in Basel for a while by then and knew many of the ropes - but when we later moved to Zurich, it was good to already have a circle of online acquaintances whom we could meet in real life - mainly by hanging out at Grumpy's stall.

It's sad that some of the long standing members were hacked off enough to want to delete their accounts. I know there are other long standing members who are no longer active - either lurk or never login - as they got fed up of the frequent sniping.

I am quite ambivalent - I think the noise to signal ratio has increased over time, and there so many times I search a topic where the first post the thread was the very thing I was looking for, and there are five pages of responses telling the OP to go and use the search (in some of the more polite cases). But now and again, I find a useful nugget of info and it is still helpful to have so much information in a single place.

Cheers,
Nick

THIS....

As a relative newbie, I will say I think that is where a lot of issues/problems stem not just on this forum but probably others. Too many simply cannot agree to disagree and take things way too personally - OR - are far too snarky in their responses to those with whom they disagree. Whatever happened to hashing things out and when at an impasse, saying: "With all due respect, I agree to disagree" and then move forward?

In this divisive political climate (US and UK), it seems very difficult to have any real/thoughtful discussion anymore. What a shame!

I personally would not make such a dramatic gesture of having my identity expunged from the forum but that is partly my own personal philosophy of keeping all options open, that is not burning bridges behind me, and also due to my recognition that no one worthy of being impressed by such a gesture remains.

I'll continue looking in from time to time when there is nothing else to do. I'll contribute if I have specific information that can help. But that is about it from me.
I am genuinely confused by this. Others have said similar things. The exits were very quiet, no drama, they literally just went (some may have said private farewells etc). It's not, IMO, burning bridges (a bridge to where?); from what I know of them I doubt very much it was a gesture of any kind. Who would they need to impress?

They have simply exercised their right, under GDPR, to be forgotten. For reasons that remain, quite understandably, their own.

This semi-outrage that folk just didn't...what... leave active unchecked accounts? leave usernames that are searchable and might be active elsewhere ?is, to my mind, strange.

The very folk who seem the most put out that they weren't informed in some way of their going are the ones who seem to decry their very participation in the first place.

I find it ironic that all the drama is here, behind the scenes. Off camera.

You are a good „relative newbie* btw. .

Posts are open, here the key points for this vacancy (in no order of preference):

The position is based on complete goodwill (no compensation) to keep an international website going which benefits most people moving to Switzerland, as well as puts money’s into the pockets of whichever joint owns it.

Your clients are over-demanding, often full of themselves to the point of the shit-pot spilling over, but you will take that in your stride, as it is to the good of the poor people who move into Switzerland that will benefit.

For this you will go over and above-board in providing entertainment and sustenance day and night, and keep a thriving community going for these seeking this way of life.

Your clients will, as a result of your goodwill, see the adverts that this site pounds on their mobile devices in the good of those poor people trying to make a life in the back-waters of Switzerland.

Apply to „whoever owns this joint“ for a position.
Who knows, it could be yours within a few clicks!

You seem to know an awful lot about them and their motives considering you purport not to know any of them and don’t follow 90% of the forum.

It’s amazing how everybody suddenly becomes an expert when this sort of thing happens.
I don't 'purport to not know any of them', I simply don't - hence on the surface, to me, it looks like not much of a coincidence.
What I know is that 6 people left dramatically in one go. Those 6 people who "to me" did not seem like 6 random people from EF.. At least on the 10% of the forum that I do read.

Swisstree left in Nov, IIRC. I really don't think there was /is a massive conspiracy. 6?

Again, where was the drama? Other than on this thread.

Did they all leave in one go?

Swisstree left before Christmas, Sandgrounder last week sometime and then DB, StirB and Edot left yesterday. Not sure who the sixth one is.
I didn’t really see anything dramatic.

Have you considered that the may all have sent their delete requests to Editor Bob at different times but he dealt with them at the same time when he got around to it?

In my perception, there are different types and groups of people on EF.

One can read a thread and normally predict with reasonable accuracy who will reply, what they say, who will agree with them, who will shoot them down and who will just turn it into an argument.. And who will simply answer the question.

Based on that, I was not surprised by the departure list ..

I know that does not directly answer the question but I don't want to move to another subject..

Have you got this weeks' lottery numbers too? That perception of yours must be mighty handy.

Not sure why answering the qu would move to another subject but is your prerogative.

Re: Mixed messages: EF deletion of posts

Possibly we should reintroduce the daily / weekly / monthly posting limit as a percentage of posts as 1 member seems to be posting relentlessly regardless of topic, even when told to stay on topic.

Of common, John_H is stirring the pot a little. He's been obviously lurking like many others and enjoyed pretending that he's only observing human nature....Molière style. It's OK, he really likes EF.
I think he'll genuinely miss DB and the others.
