The Swiss, like many countries, develop their friendships within their school / internship/ university friends. And this stays through a lifetime. So they have no need for other friendships, that need to be developed after work hours in a bar.
True.

My daughter spent 5 years in LA, and returned two years ago, and most of her friends are still those she grew up with.

My other daughter married such, despite a three year separation in the interim.

Most of my Swiss and Italian friends I met early on, most 30+ years ago, a couple that I met 38 years ago during an internship in ZH.

They were shall we say, a group?
They were not exactly 5 random people from EF who spontaneously decided to leave.
A group? They know each other on-line (as I do) but most have them haven't met each other, or all of each other in real life. But you know, people who tend to agree with each other politically or humanly do tend to group together and have similar opinions on things.

First, my apologies as I am already running late for yodel rehearsal, I read the first 5 pages then skipped to this last one, so might be missing bits of the puzzle: having been on this forum for 10 years, I might not share all the views of the names mentioned as "having left", but I met some of them and truly, they were wonderful people. I was particularly concerned about DB because, after hearing the wonderful news of the birth of their little one, I also read there had been a terrible fire in the little town where they live and one person of about his age died. I sent some private messages and never got replies.

At least, can someone say if DB is no longer on this forum as a result of his decision (a message proving therefore he is alive!) or simply has been deleted. I might be overreacting a little but this forum has been incredibly supportive in good and bad times, I have not a clue about why so "many" old names have decided to leave suddenly, I don't understand this business of "guest" etc., I just want to know that DB is alright and wtf is going on???
Thanks for your concern, Mr Breakfast is alive and well.

All of this is very sad for EF, or what EF used to be at least. A place where many of us felt we belonged, we made great friends, socialised and enjoyed the wit and wisdom of so many great writers and contributors.

I wandered down a link posted on EF the other day, and stumbled across a batch of photos of you and others at an early EF gathering. Oh...and by the way...Congratulations on the prominent advert on the artist Migros bags. They were in a window display near us last week.

Re: Mixed messages: EF deletion of posts

I guess its all down to user turnover, at the height of EF there where thousands of expats in switzerland, turn over was huge, now the banks have cut back newbies are thin on the ground, and the ones left have been here decades, so it feels intimidating to and newbie daring to venture on here and asking silly questions

THIS!!

I wouldn't want to miss any of my experiences, good and bad, which I made through my 14 years on this forum and in Expat geared groups before.
Of course, the friendships formed at the beginning that last 'til this day and hopefully far into the future, are much cherished!

Thanks to everyone for having played and still playing a part in my life. I learnt a lot on the way, too, by trying to be helpful through writing.

Why should I complain about the effects of somebody being long on a forum???

Tho EF imho seems to have a problem with some members who think that being here longer than others make them more special and grants them a stronger voice when discussing EF.

It's a forum like so many others, people come some for the laughs, some for a question to never return other just to troll or have something to do when smoking outside etc.., people go for whatever reason, staff changes and thus how things are modded changes atmosphere and mood changes, deal with it.

This is your personal opinion and perception, which I accept, but personally I disagree with it.

The wealth of information that can now be found on EF, a big fat lot of it..... dates back to the times of its beginning.

When and where many members, such as I too (who was one of the few born and bred Swiss members back then), spent hours on end writing long files and helping posts to answer enquiries.
Translating basic contracts, documents, laws and other such stuff.

I don't know how much of that 'old' stuff is still available, since 'The Local' took over, yet many of us 'Oldies' know still who was also amongst the serious contributing tribe of the beginnings.

For me it is NOT a stronger voice those people have, but it is also my respect for the time they gave up for the greater good of a forum like EF and helping many people on the way. OH, and THANKS for the help one gave was often quite sparse, yet we kept on doing it!

THIS is what I for one am about with my ramblings on this thread, nowadays I am not sure if people would be willing to put voluntarily in as much over a long period of time.... for as little as we got......

Call it the naivete and passion of the Founding Mothers/Fathers. Similar to the US Founding Fathers who had no clue what their country will turn into

It should all still be there, if your search mojo is good enough. Some value may have been lost due to user account deletions, i.e. you can't specifically search for threads or posts by those individuals any more, but in principle it's all still available.

Oh well, that is at least good news that he is alive and kicking.

I'd quite often find myself on a thread where he was also active, tripping over each other and, in some respects, showed signs of having the same sense of humour. For example, when he was banned from here for a few days, I wrote a spoof obituary for him. It's here https://www.englishforum.ch/general-...forgotten.html. (and may now be more appropriate than then). It was, as some may see, an attempt at literary exercise where a number of editors where contributing to a draft obituary, some throwing in irreverent comments. Something like you would expect if you published a draft obituary on the EF and asked for comments. Anyway, at least he enjoyed it afterwards, although I also got a few red reps from others for it. I wouldn't repeat anything similar. For one thing, such things would no longer fit in with the Forum culture of today. For another, I have now better things to do with my time. Also, I never met him in real life. I had considered contacting him once when I was doing bike tour which took me past Walensee. But then I remembered a post he wrote when he was teasing a newbie here about the risk of eating long pork, and thought better of it. Unfortunately, I won't now be able to find that post, now all his work has been anonymised. Sad indeed.
