Agreed- however, there is a huge difference with a link posted without context, or as part of a conversation where the link was discussed and is added as part of the conversation, in the context of said converstation, as a natural follow-up. Surely?

Rufus, exactly, the context was very clear. Would you mind reposting with a comment please. Thanks.
I can undelete and edit it to add the context if you'd rather.

Am I understanding this correctly?

You quoted a post asking for specific information and provided a link giving that information?
Not quite. The quoted post just said
Quote:
You made me curious about this person. Where can I listen to/read her speech?
so there wasn't any clear context.

Emily Maitlis had clearly been the subject of discussion. A certain mod was just flexing her mod arm I reckon.

Lesson learned, however. Ta.

Seems pretty clear to me unless somebody was just reading that post in isolation.

Well yes, but I, for one, often read just the New Posts, as to many others, I'm sure, so indeed it would have been in isolation.

Anyway, all sorted now, rules clarified here, other thread cleaned up, nothing more to see here...

Great thanks.
No doubt whoever deleted the said post only read just the New Posts.

What an absolutely bizarre thing to do. Most posts probably don’t make any sense to you if you only read the new posts in every thread.
I do the new posts thing too but almost always have to go back and read earlier posts in the thread in order to understand what’s going on.

Re: Rules on posting links please

How about a rule that says any thread that falls into a slagging match should be deleted.

Way too many these days.

Yes, would say it is impossible to moderate without following the thread.

Bowlie, I tend to agree. However, since some Mods often are the cause - i wouldn't it mean that any posts/thread that they don't agree with, just get culled? In which case, it is time to go, like so many have already done.

Re: Rules on posting links please

I’ve hidden so many people and a few threads. I’m going to hang around a little longer, helping out - if I can. But ...

Too bad I can’t hide moderators.

Sure. There's an assumption that I would have already seen the previous posts, and yes, if I was performing mod actions of course I'd re-read back up the thread for all context.

Just explaining why a little supplied context can improve readability for all with minimal additional effort from the poster.

Here is the EF rules list.
I hadn't thought to look there (it's the Terms of Use page) for specifics, but since you've raised it, there's a couple of other rules there that may be worth mentioning, as they're perhaps more clearly stated here than elsewhere and may help remove some ambiguity.

Quote:
Prohibited material or content include, but are not limited to material or content that:
...
promote information that you know is deceptive or phony
...
contain restricted or password only access pages not linked to from another accessible page or hidden pages or images;
...
contain political or religious propaganda;
So intentional fake news is out, links to subscription-only news pages also, and potentially youtube or similar links to political extremists.

Should we start being a little more rigourous about these, do you think?

So long as moderator actions in a thread are not performed by a mod who is actively posting in that thread then there is usually no issue; such involved mods can always call in a non-involved colleague if there is something needs to be addressed.
Oh, and just to point out that this is not a rule as such. so we wouldn't bother referring to the team for obvious breaches of policy, insults, spam, etc. etc.

Intentional fake news is not out, read it again.

Quote:
promote information that you know is deceptive or phony or promote illegal activities or conduct that is insulting, obscene, threatening, derogatory or slanderous;
Or maybe I didn't understand your post.

Think you missed this bit:

promote information that you know is deceptive or phony
Which is kinda the definition of fake news.
