Hi folks

Having had a post of mine deleted because it contained "zero commentary" on an included link - despite it quoting and clearly answering a request for info - I'd like to know the precise rules.

Cheers.

Mod Note: Post copied and edited to help the thread read correctly.

Rules on posting links please

@MC, what was wrong with that link? Which rule was broken?

You've deleted RufusB's post but I don't think it was worse than TonyClifton's here Daily Mail link.

Where is that rule, please? Would be grateful to a link to this rule on EF.

Rufus, could you kindly repost with a commentary- thanks.

Since when? I quoted the request. The link to the post should have been entirely clear.

You’re going to have a busy evening deleting posts then because there are plenty of them on the forum.

Re: Rules on posting links please

Omtatstat is clearly not aware of this rule as that’s what most of his posts consist of.

Yeah. And the joke thread, music vid thread etc.

I really would like to know. I'm sure I've posted links without commentary before and not had a slapdeletion.

Re: Boris Johnson for PM?

indeed- and much much more important rules have been broken re personal attacks, 'accusing' people of dropping their knickers for rich men, allegations of hysteria related to gender, etc- and by Mods, have not been deleted (I don't mind perso... but ....). So it is a bit like Cummings and co- rules apply only to the plebs, or those with 'ovaries', etc. Nonsense. Accusing all that do not agree with 'you' of hysteria, having ovaries of having no SOH is also a classic form of cyber bullying, hiding very badly behind so called humour.

Anyway, link to said rule please, from anyone if MC doesn't. Thanks.

Re: Rules on posting links please

Well the posting guidelines clearly suggest not to include links with no context, but it's not always so rigidly applies as it might be. It's still good netiquette, regardless of specific rules, or lack of.

As for the other member mentioned, he very often has posts/threads deleted for this reason, but some, where the title is clear enough, are left in place, and of course there may be many that we don't actually spot.

For future reference, I'd ask that anyone posting links like this should indeed give a clue as to what it is they're posting, please. Something like "here's a video of nnn talking about xxx" or similar would be perfectly acceptable.

EDIT: Yes, jokes, music videos, 'youtube of the day' etc. threads probably don't need much, if anything, added, if the thread is clearly titled in sch a way as to know what to expect.

Here is the EF rules list.

So long as moderator actions in a thread are not performed by a mod who is actively posting in that thread then there is usually no issue; such involved mods can always call in a non-involved colleague if there is something needs to be addressed.

Cool. But I clearly did provide the clue - the post asking for the information I then provided.

Agreed- however, there is a huge difference with a link posted without context, or as part of a conversation where the link was discussed and is added as part of the conversation, in the context of said converstation, as a natural follow-up. Surely?

Rufus, exactly, the context was very clear. Would you mind reposting with a comment please. Thanks.

Yes, it was perhaps borderline, given that you quoted the question, but it still wasn't completely clear at a glance who/what you were referring to, to anyone who wasn't following the thread. It took me several clicks just now to work my way up the thread to where the context was made clear.

Again for future reference and to avoid conflict, just ask yourself "would someone looking at this post on it's own know what I was posting about?".

Am I understanding this correctly?

You quoted a post asking for specific information and provided a link giving that information?
In that case I don’t think it broke any rules. I guess you could have prefaced the link with ‘look here’ or something but it really wouldn’t have added anything to the post.

I know there is ‘history’ between yourself and MC and as such I don’t think she should have been moderating that discussion. She was already heavily involved in it.
