Re: Rules on posting links please

This is a thread split about thread splits, showing how we can manage these better.

Splitting threads - thread starter etc.

@Ace1,

I just noticed some development here.

Please, I didn't start this thread. As such, I would kindly ask not to appear as the OP.

I have asked MC a question in another thread, she answered, all good with me.

It is very upsetting to start a thread without my permission, using a sentence that someone else not me has used. I mean the title of the thread here. I have never written anywhere "Rules on posting links please". It is disingenuous to say the least. Sorry, I have to make these things clear as I don't want to be jumped on here.

You start it, not me. You be the OP.

Thank you.

Yes, I moved the other posts from the original thread and yours happened to be the first. Quite tricky, but I'll see what I can do.

EDIT: There, how's that?

How about a rule that says any thread that falls into a slagging match should be deleted.

Way too many these days.
Ace1 decided to split threads, I didn't start this thread. He also used someone else's requirement in the title not mine.

I got the answer and I was OK. I don't care if it was fair or not.

Let's stop this nonsense. If I wanted to know exactly this specific rule maybe, maybe I would have started the thread myself.

Thank you for pointing this out, greenmount.

I can see that Ace1 has now fixed this error, so thank you Ace1.

Yes, I've had this happen to me, too, before, without my knowledge, attributing to me a thread I would never have started, with a topic that I would never have chosen. Not okay, in any way, and I agree with greenmount that this can be upsetting. In that case, too, it took several mails until, at last, a mod fixed it. In the case of this thread, case, it's fixed, as far as greenmount goes. Good.

I would like to request that in future mods please, if ever they split threads, own their actions, and not impose a thread and a title onto any other user besides themselves. As greenmount said: "You start it, not me. You be the OP." Thank you.

It's difficult to do, as all posts will appear on chronological order with the earliest appearing as the first in the thread. There's no way to change timestamps.

I've now worked out that by copying an unrelated post from the poster of one's choice (in this case RufusB who originally started this thread after earlier comments in t'other one) of around the right time, then editing it accordingly, it's possible to achieve, which hopefully, now we know we can do it, will be used on future thread splits.

I think it is the "of one's choice" part that causes the issue.

I understand what you wrote about the chronology.

Even so, greenmount was "chosen" to be designated as OP of a thread, without her knowing it. Se became the "owner" of a new thread she had not created and for which she had not chosen the thread title. And while that was the case (before you fixed it) anyone looking up "all threads started by greenmount" would have seen that thread, as hers - although it was not. And that is what happened to me, too, on another occasion.

This kind of decision-making, about what you will attribute to a user, can cause a lot of misunderstanding and trouble, which can be avoided. I'm glad you've found a workaround, at least partially.

If you choose to split threads, then please, beforehand, ask the poster of [your] choice whether they're okay with now having a new thread put in their name, that they didn't start, and whether they agree with the title you've chosen.

Otherwise, they run the risk of being "OP", throughout, about a topic they didn't even start, and might not want.
I wonder whether Rufus was in agreement with your assigning a thread to her.

EDIT: Oh, no! I see we've just lost RufusB, too! Nooooooo, noooo, nooooo.....

No, she wasn't chosen, just that of the split thread posts hers was the first. As soon as she pointed it out it was remedied. The choice I made was simply to chose the real thread starter as someone to copy a post from.
