Re: Biased moderation

I just saw this one in the other thread about "favorite moderators", and since the thread is closed, I'll wrap it up over here.

Quote:
If people did not regularly agree with MC she would not have the highest rep of not only a Moderator but of any active poster.
I thought it would be obvious, but I guess that it needs to be stated that a person's popularity in posting and commenting has absolutely nothing to do with being a good moderator. How childish, the whole thread.

Actually...

Most posts:

1. st2lemans Has written the most posts on the board at a whopping 28,746. Congratulations.
2. Medea F comes in second place at 21,238
3. Wollishofer ( last visit 17.12.2016)
4. Fatmanfilms - 18,246
5. MusicChick - 14,979

Most Rep (active posters)

1. Music Chick
2. Lost inBroad
3. Tom1234

I find it very suspicious that two mods have the most rep which makes me question the rep system as a whole. However, rep means little when there are a substantial number of reputable and longtime posters who are frustrated with continuous harmful modding behavior by a certain individual. When a mod becomes a liability, it is time for them to resign from their role. Refusing to do so shows lack of respect towards the good of the board.

My two cents.

I find this a bit illogical. What would you rather? The posters with the least reputation get made moderators? Omastat for moderator? Surely it's those who command the most respect who should be put in a position of responsibility? And that they have a range of views and opinions as a group? (I have no idea whether this is the case tbh as I'm too new). Because her high rep seems to suggest that she's held in a high opinion outside a particular clique.

Maybe you tend to have quite (well lets be honest, very) partisan views, which is fine in and of itself, as the world would be really boring otherwise) and take against a particular moderator because they don't agree with you?

Of that top 5 posters, there's probably 2 you also disagree with at least as much and neither are moderators, I imagine because they like you are probably a bit too strong minded for that particular role. You all add to the place anyway. Ultimately one of the three should probably be a mod for the sake of balance, or the place would risk degenerating into a twitter style Echo chamber.

Can you think if someone you else disagree with who should be made a mod? FMF? St. Lemans? Because there's at least one mod who very openly flaunts left wing views at least as much as MC does right wing. That's fine to a degree as long as there's balance.

I quote from one of their recent posts.

"Tony, stop digging or you'll never climb out of this hole you're creating."

They were also named previously on a post entitled "overmoderation". I personally think with some justification (it was a totally non political point, and not a serious issue, but it just goes to show that it's not an easy job.

(To clarify, I like the person involved and have no issues with them being a moderator, but to say they don't take a political viewpoint is not justifiable).

Maybe I'm a bit touchy but that's because there's a pretty undeniable tendency on the Internet for people with left wing views to shout out moderate right wing views (Facebook, Twitter), especially after Brexit for us Brits and don't want that happening here. Ironically those with hard and far right views are rather better at being heard.

Atm you can hear from voices ranging from Marton and yourself to the abovementioned Tony Clifton without fear or favour and that's a good thing and not that common.

Re: Biased moderation

This isn’t political. This is about treating posters with respect. It’s about making decisions for the good of the board. It’s about trusting a mod to make unbiased decisions. It’s about posters worrying this may not be the case due to repeated actions in the past.

It’s about abuse of power.

Edit: I understand your concern about posters reacting to right wing views. I’ve just had to hide a friend’s post on FB due to her left wing attack on me. I love political discussions as long as they remain respectful. Unfortunately, emotions can run high on both sides leading people to become idiots...

You forgot consistency and impartiality.

Mods should always sound off in the Mod Zone as to what they believe is necessary for those who appear to troll and kick off; it's always worth getting a second opinion because we're all human and all have emotions.

For a relatively new user you have a lot of knowledge about EF.

Anyways, I would like to politely remind you that this is not a place of refuge for disappointed Brits. This community, as you should know, is as diverse as you can get. We would all like to have a place where we can feel comfortable and respected, without the bullshit you can safely have in the comments section of Daily Mail. If possible. The forum was founded by a South-African expat (R.I.P.) who was far away from a right-winger or Brexiteeer or Trumpeteer. He had something else in mind when he created this site.
Thanks.

I've been viewing the Forum since I decided to move here - between a year and 18 months. Arrived here 23,February.

Not sure what you mean about disappointed Brits, but I would definitely agree that everyone should have a voice, and would never ever wish to recreate the Daily Heil! (FDP type here not SVP)

You seem to think a moderatorís job is to edit content in order to ďbalanceĒ opinion or viewpoint. Itís definitely not. There are clear rules and a mod is there to enforce them, not to edit out people she disagrees with. Thatís what MC does, while thanking comments that take the opposite view of the person she deleted, and itís the basis for complaints against her.

Another mod does exactly the same, removes posts & closes threads if he gets pulled up.

A small group here may think MC is a liability but not everyone agrees with you.

Understanding that other people may have different opinions seems to be a problem for said group, also with other topics.

No I just think there should be a diversity of opinion amongst the Moderation Team.

We're talking about actions, not opinions. I couldn't care less if mods believed in praying to the moon or practised being human centipedes, as long as their responsibilities as a mod remain unbiased and impartial.

obviously you don't want someone with low/negative rep being a mod but maybe you don't want too many mods with highest rep as that might encourage a kind of echo chamber.

maybe you need something in the middle ground. someone ranked, say, 23rd in the rep standings.
