Are the rules of decency on EF also applicable to pms and red rep messages?

Or not - as long as it is hidden from public view- are crass and very rude insults and vague threats acceptable?

Re: Are the rules of decency on EF also applicable to pms and red rep messages?

If you have a certain user who writes you pms or rep messages that are insulting or threatening, the quickest, most efficient way to get these out of your space is to add that user to your "ignore list".

To do this:
  • go onto your own profile's "control panel"
  • from the list on the left-hand side, select "edit ignore list", and
  • there, add the username to your ignore list.

This means they are blocked. They will go ahead and still write whatever they like, but you will not have to see what they write, neither in their posts on threads nor in any PMs they send to you. Those messages can become accessible to you, once again, if you then choose to remove them from your "ignore list", but then that's at least your own choice.

I do not know whether they are then also blocked from writing rep messages... anyone know this?

Unfortunately, on this forum, it is no longer possible to add a mod to your ignore list. That means that it if you wish to avoid reading what a mod writes, that takes a bit of extra effort.

Please report them to the mods.

Why is it actually not allowed to post them?
Naming and shaming might really help in case of insults sent privately so that we all can get to know the sender a bit better.

I agree. Naming and shaming people who send insulting posts might make them behave a little better. Mostly these people are too timid to say things like this in real life, but anonimity turns them into some sort of animals. I hope if a mod gets to read these messages, and they turn out to be that bad, the sender should be banned.

... and then drawn and quartered, and then keel-hauled, and then sent to work in the white house as Donald's personal assistant.

It probably would be better to reverse these punishments, I can't imagine keel hauling bits of offenders ...

I agree. Whoever has been threatening someone in rep should definitely be named and shamed. Totally unacceptable.

Don’t the mods have the ability to read rep comments anyway? I seem to remember that being part of one of the issues with MC on one occasion.

Surely all they’d need to do would be to look at Jackie’s profile and they’d be able to see who the perpetrators were and act accordingly.

it is possible in vBulletin to do certain things - either as a superadmin or going into the database itself.

Abusive PMs and/or reputation comments should earn the sender a vacation.

Do people still get and give rep points? That's so cute

I have heard through the grape vine that an empty comment was left, so it would appear I was right.

Marvin, is that you?

Well I am glad it was cleared up. Makes the thread a bit strange - but, still, the answer is that there is no space for such things on this or any other forum.

We do have that ability, although I personally don't bother to go around looking at people's rep. I have better things to do with my time, so I only look when reported. In this case I took a look and the offending user has now been banned.

As a reminder, mods cannot read PMs - so if you (collective you, not just BM) receive an inappropriate/abusive PM then please use the report triangle or forward to a mod to ask for help. This includes spam requests for money or love matches, etc. as well as abusive messages from other members.

Thanks.

Edit for clarity - There's no report button for rep comments. To report those, send a PM to a mod or two.

Because someone decided a while ago that "private" means not to be published elsewhere, and therefore if you do publish private messages sent to you, you get a slap on the wrist or a ban.

Personally I think the rules is daft and cannot see the point of it.
