Over moderation part 2

I would have just added a post to my similar complain (about the same mod) two years ago... but you guys locked the thread... so I have to make a new one.

I'll keep this short: We sadly had an update to this thread. Tom was rightfully wondering why this post got a groan and asked the person out in a post that was in my eyes in no way aggressive or insulting. While I for once agree with him did I find it honestly funny that our greatest drive-by groaner asks other users to explain themselves... and replied accordingly. An hour later are the posts all deleted for the "personal attack".

I know that certain mods regularly need to confirm to themselves that they have the power to mess around... but I dont like my posts getting deleted for no reason and I really dont get it: what exactly was wrong here? Where was the personal attack? It all looks a lot tamer than any of the political threads the involved users participate in... and nobody seems to have taken any offense to it.

Yes, the deleted post contained a gratuitous attack on the groaner, and the other reply continued it. No, I'm not going to repeat it here or discuss it, the fact is that it fell foul of the expected standard of behaviour as outlined some time ago.

Your own post, while I got the humour of pointing out the irony of the question, also quoted the insulting comment so got caught up in the deletion.

Yes, maybe, or, and I know that this may seem contentious to some, posters could simply refrain from quoting inflammatory or insulting comments in the first place?

It's a lot easier for a poster to make sense of something without the quote than it is for a mod to come along afterwards and try to edit it into some shape that makes sense. And even when we do we're often criticised, as some folk really resent having their posts edited.

I would guess that the salary coming in from EF is not high enough to want to do this ;)

I think there is under moderation. Allowing threads like this? :p

imo, better not to do the job than do a half-assed job. leave it for another mod to do it properly. otherwise the moderation activity could create more adverse issues than it resolves.

it's a lose-lose situation. Speaking from experience, it's a thankless task and sometimes not everyone likely the moderation. If they hit an 80/20 ratio in favour of "satisfaction" then we should be happy. I think they do that.

This should be in the first world problems thread.

I’d like to thank all the moderators for their efforts herding all the cats on this forum. To those who don’t like it, why don’t you volunteer to moderate a thread or too.

The value for money we receive on this forum is incredible.

that applies to engineering, not so much to making music or cooking my own food where half-assed jobs are OK. moderating a forum is closer to building a bridge where 5K cars cross every day or making myself a sandwich? Levity is convenient sometimes.

It is a sandwich. But it's amazing.

It's almost as good as Coop salmon goodness.

But the groaner goes out of his way to gratuitously attack many on this forum and yet he is protected, regularly.

I agree the groaner is a nasty piece of work.

I'd agree, but that's giving too much importance to a bored kid that takes himself too seriously.

I'm going to raise a fizzy something-or-other to the fact that I either don't know who the groaner is, don't care or both

LOL yes, not got a clue as I have been out all day. The mind boggles - but don't tell me our biggest drive-by groaner groaned about a groan?

16 posts and nobody mentions "that other forum they moderate". must be an EF record.

OP gave a link to it in his post, here you go ;):

The serial groaner is tolerable, the other one is just mean...cleverly so, I guess too clever for the mods to delete his posts as they are not seen as an "attack".

ah well, as _V_ groans me constantly for no apparent reason, I find it funny.
