I only found out 2 years ago that tenterhooks are being referred to for anticipation/anxiety.
I had long thought it was tenderhooks and had a mental image of hanging on some form of butchers hook that tenderised meat and it was an unpleasant place to be.

"The phrase "on tenterhooks" means "waiting nervously for something to happen." A tenterhook is literally a sharp hook that fastens cloth to a tenter, a frame on which cloth is stretched for even drying to prevent shrinkage. The phrase compares the tenseness of the fabric to the feeling of being very tense."

I know that for the last 2 years. I don't think tenterhooks are used all that often anymore.

Is this Middle English?

Sort of! It looks like the first use of the phrase "to be on tenterhooks" was in 1748, but tenters have been in use since the 1300s and the phrase originated as "to be on tenters" in the 1530s.

So let's give Middle English the plaudits at least for the origin of this expression.

Many years ago I worked by the river Aire in central Leeds. A local historian told me about Tenter hooks, and that 200 years previous they dug channels from the river which they could flood in which to stretch wool - the area was big for wool weaving then. The building I worked in by the side of the river was called Tenter Lane, it's all been built over now and obliterated by fancy offices and apartments.

This thread tells you all you need to know about EF. Totally pathological - like a mud fight in a nursing home.

Anyway, you do all know that Editor Bob doesn't actually exist, don't you? He's an emergent property of the system. After all, has anyone ever seen him? (With or without a mask.) I rest my case.

"Burn" means stream in NE England (as it did elsewhere in England in Middle English)

And in Scotland, that burn in Jedburgh sometimes is more than a stream though
