Mod coup?

I'm hesitant to raise this in public, but it seems that I have no choice. I hope that it gets resolved quickly and removed from public view.

Something is not well in the moderator team.

A decision that was taken after consultation to ban certain members has been reversed.

22 yards, who proposed the ban, and myself, who supported it, have been removed from the Super Moderator and Moderator groups. Not only that, but our ability to send private messages has been artificially revoked, so we can't even message the other mods.

Another mod who is still a mod has contacted me to say she's been locked out of certain mod action. I can't reply though.

There are three possible culprits.
1. Another mod.
2. Editor Bob.
3. A hacker.

Re: Mod coup

That sucks, sorry to hear it. Do all mods have the ability to administrate the rights of other mods? Seems strange if so, as usually those rights belong only to higher level admins.

I guess the first people to look at would be the mod(s) who opposed the banning of said member. I doubt Editor Bob has an interest in such things, as distant from forum politics as he is.

EDIT - Seems I guess right and TonyClifton is now unbanned. His main mod supporter in all political debates was I think MusicChick, so maybe start by asking her?

It's never been an issue, but yes, in theory any mod could remove any other from the various groups.

He didn't see the mod discussion about it until the ban had been performed, and has since said he wouldn't have agreed with it but would not unilaterally reverse it.

It deed seem somewhat unfair that 2 of the people banned just had differing views than 22 yards, censorship of this kind should not be encouraged so maybe Editor Bob acted for once.

Then that is broken and should be fixed asap. Mods of the same level should not have the rights to mess with each others access rights, only regular members.

Ok. I would certainly start by asking someone like MC then...

Re: Mod coup

Firstly, you should be banned, Ace, for the abuse of the wod "myself". The word you seek is "me".

I would guess that it's not a hacker and it would be a ballsy move from another mod.

Let's see if someone is man or woman enough to stand up behind their move here.

Yeah, a 'hacker' whose only motive for the 'hack' was to remove the mod powers of a couple of mods who banned a specific member and then unban that specific member. Makes perfect sense.

If it wasn't Editor Bob then I would bet my back teeth that it another mod as they have the power, and likely motive, to do all of these things.

You mean mods overstepping their good authority and silencing people with different opinion than theirs expressed in a non-abusive way?

Now that will be a first

Re: Mod coup

I love a Monday morning witch hunt.

If EB is out then let's see this ballsy mod stand up for their action and explain it. It would never have happened like this in the old days, I am sure. I wonder if the rogue ban-hammer mod tried banning a mod before demoting that person

I am not talking about the initial ban of TonyClifton or the reason for it, I am talking specifically about what has now happened as described in the OP. Logically speaking, what motive would a "hacker" have for doing these very specific things regarding one member? Answer: probably none.

Is that why I never received a reply from you about my deleted post a week ago when you mentioned "against the rules" yet nothing of the sort was in the rules about that?

it looks like another mod agreed and gave them a little taste of their own medicine

TC might be a bit tiresome, but there's an ignore function to deal with that.

My eyes do that. I don't see the point of actually putting someone on an ignore list, it's not hard to gloss over things that have little meaning. And that's not highlighting anyone in particular

Ahh ha! So that's why the coronavirus thread has suddenly become more bearable and people are able to have rational, intelligent and productive conversations in there again, without constantly arguing in circles about masks.

I suppose it's a matter of subjectivity, but I have found the ignore function to be a very effective bulls*** filter and also a means to more easily ignore irrational, aggressive members who have you on their 'target' list.
