Our French neighbour from Paris asked where I came from in France as she could not pinpoint my accent, I find this highly amusing as I was asked the same question by a waiter in the south of France, he then started speaking English with my then French Girlfriend (He was from the Alsace ). As my grammar is fairly non existent its bordering on ridiculous, my wife says I speak 'Bluffers French' | | | | | My father was great at languages, particularly at French. And that back in the day when their exposure was almost inexistent. When he visited France for the first time in the 90s he was asked whether he was a French language teacher back home. He was quite flattered. His generations studied Russian too.

So, to summarise the preceding couple of hundred posts, the moderators can cancel negative reputation blobbies, but won't.

Which of mine would you prefer?
Mods should put lil flags next to the status! Like Ikea store people: I speak....

Unfortunately only OP (and the mods I think) can see who :-)

To not expect a thread to meander with 45 participants...is a good theory. Internet does that. The OP got his answer a while back so I am not worried.
I wonder where he went. The green he got from people was a kind gesture. Internet does that, too. People are mostly kind, imho.
SoftDrink - meta-derailing? Meh.

Yet the latter four are classified as modern languages and the former two are not. Why?
What all these languages have in common is that massively more people speak them as a second language than natively. If indeed any native speakers survive at all.
I heard recently that there are only two native speakers of Ainu left, both of them over 100. Yet there are several 10,000 speakers who learnt it as a second language (to varying degrees of proficiency). At what point does a language cease to be modern?

The sociolinguistics and pragmalinguistics studies I took operated with a lot of terms, "second" language was another, etc.
I remember years back we had a heated debate on "semi-fluent", was it? Semi-literate!
