To follow up on this, I'm not sure if people are aware just how many members have been banned for having the "wrong opinions". Almost always by the same moderators. Furthermore, how many members have deleted their profile. I've even had people reach out to me about starting up a rival forum!!!

Would someone please tell me how people become mods here?

1)Do you ask EB for the job?
2) Does someone on the mod team recommend a poster?
3) Is your name pulled out of a hat?
Apparently you just need to complain to EB and then he, without any background checks or knowledge, promotes you and demotes someone else without informing them.

A group of former posters actually created a rival forum and had it up and running. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough interest so it all led to a lonely road with little traffic and no real significance.
yeah? what was it called?

But we don't really know, do we? How does a mod become a mod?

Man, it was so long ago. Was it called English Talk? Others might have a better recollection.

They started the forum in a fury and actually put something quite decent together. Unfortunately, it just didn't take off. Switzerland doesn't need two "English Forums."

Up until now it's always been as a result of discussions within the mod team, one of whom would then reach out to the potential new member to feel out their willingness to do the job. Then if we all agree we'd approach EB with our recommendations and he would do the necessary behind-the-scenes changes. Existing mods' powers could do some of the required changes, like adding someone to the Super Moderator group, but there's a lot of other things, like access to the Admin Control Panel, which they cannot control.

I think bringing some balance to the team was long overdue.
Pfff balance? Every single person listed currently as a mod has balanced opinions except for now two of them, who have very strong opinions and have at times been a polarizing force on this forum. You are just happy because their opinions favor yours ...

This is one of the reasons why I didn't sign up, I didn't think it would get traction and also that it may become an echo chamber.

The difference is that the moderator who I believe you're referring to lets discussion go without using their views to silence or harass others who have different views by sending passive aggressive warnings or being outright insulting. This is what being a good moderator is all about!

Looks like Mod Coup all over again. Once again, 22Yards and myself have been completely removed as mods, the others have had a lot of their superpowers removed. Not sure what triggered it, although there were some internal discussions a couple of days ago.

Now, of course, I can't see those discussions, so can't tell if they were followed up, but basically one moderator was attacking all the rest and accusing us of being politically motivated in our actions. I'm on hols at the moment so didn't comment, but it was very much a case of one against the whole of the rest of the team.
Going behind your back and getting all vindictive? Nice.

@Ace, it's a wonderful weather outside, you may want to take advantage of it and get a better perspective on these things.... We probably invested emotionally in this online community (in spite of our better judgement lol) but it's just more and more polarised and ridiculous.

How about giving the new mod a chance before making sweeping statements like this?

What a strange bit of logic. Surely if you signed up there was more chance it would get traction
