Anyway, that doesn't stop people from talking about 30 years before in Switzerland and how nice it was. I guess they invented the internet in their basements.
PS. I remember that before bulletin boards I used mailing lists, like the ones implement in yahoo. Did EF existed as mailing list?

It's an ace-ten card game played with a Swiss variation of the traditional French deck (A, 2-10, J, Q, K) in which you must collect points through winning rounds and scoring with the round. The suits are roses, acorns, shields and bells, and the jack, queen and king are replaced by an Ober, Under and Banner. Same concept, different illustrations and names.

But some of the people on EF knew one another before there was an EF so there is always a before the before in some shape of form.

Oh them good ol' days when you couldn't decipher half of the hand-writings and therefore didn't notice the typos and erroneous syntax.

I had a mailing list, too, and since it was quite private and span across a few continents - it was hilarious. Time zones, etc. A bunch of musicians/tech/randomly added friends, cca 50 people. I liked the feature of a public post where you automatically select "reply all" or only the sender, it was quite fun, since stuff got shared later on anyways. Threads meandered away from folks and then came back to the entire group, it was like people at a party walking away and coming back with entirely different ideas.
I don't want to be too boomerish and say it was better, actually it wasn't better. I like the reach BBs have. We are a cozy size but inclusive and democratically open to anyone on the webz. I think online communities if they can resist too much censorship really improve with time, grow away from teething troubles. Maybe I am too optimistic, but teachers usually are.

We used to bitch about not being able to see the smoke signals because of the smog.

You guys were lucky with internet. We only had tapped phone lines, no webz for a long time. But I got really good at Atari games. And we built printers out of this: | This user would like to thank MusicChick for this useful post: | |

I wonder if I set it as a cell ring, maybe I'll start liking it.

I actually found the dialing tone to be reassuring. It showed that at least something was working, even if nothing else was, as was often the case.
It showed that you were at least physically still connected to the telephone network, so most likely any other problem you had was a software problem, and with enough perseverance and logic you could typically get to the bottom of that.

Gee, that makes me giggle. I only remembered the dialling tone but not the awful noise that followed.
