I think this is a governance topic and therefore important if the forum wants to stay attractive to a wide range of people. And there is only stonewalling from editors or mods on what the course here is.
I'm not sure what you're expecting by way of governance. EF is essentially a hobby project with ads attached by our owners.

We're not stonewalling, we just can't give a hard and fast answer. Mods and admins will moderate as they see fit at the time. It's not always going to be 100% consistent, but it should be relatively clear when things cross the line.

We have no diktat from The Local, but it's reasonable to assume that what they host reflects on them and that they don't want anything likely to cause the blowback of recent weeks.

The mod team will try to keep things moderate. You might see the results as being a bit vanilla, but there should be no assumption of unfettered free speech here.

I'm happy to leave things to be debated here that I utterly disagree with, as long as there is no potential for harm, be that to people or the owners. That's my line and I don't see a way to codify that.

Twaddle. Proof by contradiction - you just posted a view that, if true, wouldn't be permitted.
Oh cute. jamon8 puts forward a theory that only the approved perspective may be now be posted. I demonstrate a proof against this by contradiction, and he red blobs me for lack of critical thinking.

Forget it. Just say he failed the saving throw.

It's all unfair, partial and random. There's no consistency. Boo bloody hoo.

This!

We live in country where everything is codified. Somehow, even for an online forum people want 100+ articles on how things are managed. This hobby should be codified as the rest of my life or I feel anxiety.....please no, let's just stay with whatever more or less the majority agrees, fallible mod judgement and ambiguity.

Also, when I say stupid things in the real world I get looks of disapproval, confrontation, lose business or even kill a relationship. How's that different to get something deleted? Should online words be more protected from consequences than in the real world?

Re: Mod deletions

Good explanation mods.

I had posts deleted in the "Twattery" section also, but it was pretty clear that one poster in particular got very personally offensive, so the whole swathe of posts related to that had to go. It would have made little sense just removing his (presumably) posts.

Thank you. This is the sensible response which I was looking for. Indeed, practice will show how things are governed, and I hope there will be a good balance. To my taste, too many deletions so far.

This is most often the case, where only one or two posts are offensive and need to be removed. But there are often many quotes and replies. It's not reasonable to expect mods to delete 25 posts individually with customized deletion messages.

Unfortunately, some people take every deletion, edit or move personally even if it was part of a group action.

Let's be fair though.

Sometimes the accusation isn't necessarily "you're all mobbing me" but "why are my posts always deleted while so-and-so gets away with everything".

That's where mods need to try and be consistent as much as possible.

Exactly and I changed one of my posts that was left standing in such a way as to avoid the sorry business reigniting and creating more work.

Did you expect anything else after reopening? There is only one and “correct” point of view possible and only “normal” people keep posting, thanking each other in the circle
As fully expected after the ridiculous closure this will lead to the death of this forum. Either heat-death (the normal end of a forum where it runs out of active posters) or vegetable like state with a few (often paid) posters answering repeated one-of questions of posters making an account to ask one specific question. There's probably a lot of circle-jerking on the way to either of these outcomes though! (yay! for those that asked for this I guess).

I'll keep my account for the vast encyclopedia that this is (thanks for that! Has been really helpful ) and asking/answering a question or 2 but that's it. Discussion was killed when well-argued dissenting views were marked as misinformation/fake news/missogony/xxx-phobic etc. People that reject everything other than their "own" opinion (own as in just proudly parrotting mainstream beliefs) cannot be argued with. Don't argue with the ministry of truth: you are going to have a bad time.

Any alternative board to this one (Switzerland focused, English language) where open discussions are still allowed? (please pm me if so).

Cheers!

Always a shame to see people leave.

I think there has definitely been more joining/re-joining than the other way around (so far anyway).

Happy trails.

Re: Mod deletions

I, as you all are certainly aware, a very sensitive person, hardly slept a wink last night. I was tormented by unsavoury images after being ordered to “suck it up” by a SSOB* member of this forum after I had mildly pointed out she was engaging in a personal attack on someone else with only slightly more misguided thought processes than she herself exhibited…

Well, after tossing and turning on my sweat soaked bed, I finally rise and after looking into minor news from unimportant corners of the earth, notice that the mods have cleaned up. Great!
My only (hang on, should I try to waste more time….) complaint is that my virtue signalling post has been deleted under cover of “general twattery”. This is all very unfair and most likely due to latent racism/homophobia/misandry/misogyny/younameit. My unimpressive reputation has been irreparably blemished. I demand satisfaction at dawn or at least a change to SPECIFIC twattery

Vampires tend not to sleep much at night - and, as one, it would be foolhardy to turn up for a duel at dawn

Nah, the forum will be fine and even improve. The forum closure by thelocal, and the resulting lower moderator tolerance for all of the crazy anti-science, conspiracy and right-wing crap which had started to explode on the forum in the last months, just means that the known bad actors will no longer have a platform to spew their nonsense.

Even in the last few days since the re-opening of the forum it feels there is a noticeable difference and improvement in the atmosphere, and the only members I really see complaining and getting outraged about it are either the usual malcontents and/or the same vocal sub-group of people whose posts were a primary reason the forum got closed in the first place.

The forum is dead, long live the forum.
