Dear thelocal Admins please can you disable/increase the resolution limit for images?

Hi Thelocal Admins,

I would please like to request something that is long overdue a change, something that is somehow trivial yet very frustrating and would be very easy thing to change in the forum admin settings.

What I am referring to is the resolution limit enforced by the forum when attaching images (JPEG, PNG etc) to the forum. It is currently 800x600, which is extremely impractical and makes it very difficult for anyone to attach any images to the forum without the effort of re-sizing images, which a lot of people do not know how to do. 800x600 is almost ridiculously small by modern standards, little more than a thumbnail.

A file size limit of course makes sense because you don't want people using up too much space, but if you could please increase, or ideally disable, the resolution limit (ideally disabled, but if necessary increased to at least 1600x1200) this would be a simple yet effective quality of life fix and would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

What would also be good is the automatic resizing of remotely posted images which send a whole page over-wide...

Yes that would also be awesome. I'm not sure if this version of vbulletin supports it though.

You know you can write a direct message to the admins.

https://www.englishforum.ch/showgroups.php

That might get a little more traction.

Cheers,
Nick

Just google imgur upload . You may resize the image to the size you want and the post the BBCode link here. The end.

I know later versions do. You can even set the scaling yourself.

No, it's not the end. The end is the forum being changed to a sensible limit that fits modern image sizes. What you are talking about is a workaround to a problem, not a solution to a problem.

Yeah, this would be the dream!

I've got my Canon set to "internet size," which works for posting, but the quality of resolution is awful. +1 for a "resolution" to this problem!

Since EF's vBulletin version is more than a decade old you shouldn't raise your hopes too high for any kind of update or new functionality unless they absolutely have to.

But despair not, you can effect such a change yourself:
Install a userscript manager like Tampermonkey or Greasemonkey, and restart your browser. Within that manager you create a new user script (you may have a mini-icon e.g. in the very top right as depicted below), copy/paste the script below, save, and refresh EF. Enjoy the always-narrow images (perhaps with the exception of your editing window), for instance the Panamera in #15 should be noticeably less wide.

As you can see I use Tampermonkey. On Windows with FF a simple way to save a script is <CTRL> + S while the cursor is in the editor window, if that doesn't work for you you can use the menu in the scriptmanager editor window, Datei/Speichern or File/Save or similar (you may see line numbers on the left, on my machine the menu is immediately above that).

------------

Now, I prefer a significantly less wide textbox (the ones you're reading right now) than what they are by default. To get that narrowed, too, you activate line 25 by removing the leading double-slash, and save. Thus you change
// divs[ii].style.width = divWidth;
to
divs[ii].style.width = divWidth;
and save. Refresh EF and enjoy. You can revert this change by adding back the leading double-slash, and remember to save that change as well.

Those who want different widths could always fiddle with the values for imgWidth (line 15) and divWidth (line 18). If something goes wrong, or maybe you decide against using the script, you can always delete the userscript, or uninstall the scriptmanager altogether, whichever you prefer.

--------

The script to copy/paste starts after the two empty lines, make sure you copy both starting slashes (don't worry if you copy 1-2 empty lines, too, that's Ok)

// ==UserScript==
// @name EF image resize
// @namespace my.englishforum
// @version 0.1
// @description Resizes oversized images on Englishforum Switzerland
// @author urs max
// @match https://www.englishforum.ch/*html
// @grant none

// ==/UserScript==

var ii = 0;

var imgs = document.getElementsByTagName("img");
var imgWidth = "800px"; // image width of 1200px corresponds to divWidth = 100%

var divs = document.getElementsByClassName("page");
var divWidth = "85%"; // general text width, default is 100%

for(ii=0;ii<imgs.length;ii++){
imgs[ii].style.maxWidth = imgWidth;
}

for(ii=0;ii<divs.length;ii++){
// divs[ii].style.width = divWidth;
;
}

Part of the charm of the English Forum is its vintage look and feel. It's like driving an old car. Urs Max's advice to run a script to customize it is spot on - that's what I do to strip out thanks and groans to give it less of the 'playground clique' ambiance.

Would say way more than a decade. At least 2 or 3.

Just in case you're not kidding:
Netscape Navigator, the first browser, is less than 3 decades old.

Indeed, BBCode is from a time where the internet was the province of the nerds and most stuff was DIY.

At some point, internet 2.0 (myspace, blogs, facebook, twitter) and smartphones arose and today few people remembers the DIY philosophy of early internet days.
