I've always wondered how many former posters are now on Reddit.
It's a much better platform for those who enjoy antagonising people and getting quick dopamine hits.

Perhaps - but Reddit is generally very pro-vax / liberal. There are echo chambers for conservatives, but generally it isn't the friendliest place for them.

No more passionate discussions any more It all seems PG15.
Do you mean the intelligent, interesting, informative and pleasant exchanges now taking place instead?

And the plain and correct answers now being provided to those coming to the Forum again with questions relating to living in Switzerland?

Good things need to be mentioned.

I'm positively surprised about the recent firewood thread. I totally prefer sharing knowledge and invitations to barbecue together over passionate debate and being called mindless sheep https://www.englishforum.ch/daily-li...wood-vaud.html
Glad to help! I really just wanted some wood!

As a newbie here, I have been really happy about almost all of the responses. There's a wealth of information and I've really appreciated it.

Of course I almost left because of a sour pair of posters who objected (groaned) to my asking information about television sets and other appliances. Of course, in the end, many more kind posters gave helpful answers and sent me PMs - pretty much in spite of the grumps.

So far things I've learned here:
how to import our cat
how to register our daughter for public school
some of the positives and negatives of local schools
various information about buying a car and insurance
converting drivers licenses
which supermarkets generally have what
information about movers/relocation companies
what is a regie
about Swiss banking and issues that Americans might have when opening an account
various cellphone info
what the local COVID pass is and where it's required
how neighbors in different regions of the country act towards newcomers
a lot about wood and where to get it
a good on line butcher
where to get salvage furniture and other cheaper furniture
where to get good new furniture
how much I can bring back if I shop in France
how people view shopping in France
how to buy the train pass and the helpful child's pass
more than I expected about potatoes
where to buy farm supplies and clothes
that Geneva residents don't cross rivers
how to get to and from airports cheaply with tons of luggage
where to seek housing and where to avoid
some myths and some confirmations about housing and people in Switzerland
some great hiking spots
cool info about boats and boathouses
Swiss online comparison sites for shopping
alternatives to amazon as well as how to use amazon here
where to get televisions and other electronics and how they are surprisingly affordable here
where to find good Japanese groceries

... and there's a lot more info I've gotten here that probably escapes me. I like doing my research and I enjoy chatting with others, especially with those who have more experience and are willing to share advice and solutions, or even just give newbies like myself a heads up on what to expect. Having lived in several countries, and been on similar forums elsewhere, I've got to say that this one has overall been the most helpful with the least amount of trolls and trolling.

So be exciting or be boring, since I found this forum back in May or June, I've really learned a lot, thank you!

It also helps if, with every post, you picture the person sitting home in front of their computer wearing nothing but a thong and cowboy boots.

Re: Forum gone quiet?

Does anyone really miss the endless cyclic arguments, baiting and stuff on the Covid thread?
There’s a limit to how many times the same stuff can be ‘discussed’ and that had been reached a long time ago. It wasn’t a discussion anymore, it was more like a contest as to who could shout the loudest.

I’m all for discussion and debate when it’s carried out in a calm and respectful manner. It would be an awfully boring place if everyone agreed with everyone else the whole time.

I think it will take a little time but we’re on the right track towards a friendly, welcoming and informative place which everyone can enjoy.

what I don't miss are the dog whistles for racism/xenophobia etc.

It is telling , that as soon as the last demodding happen, the people who were too keen on posting stuff like that are nowhere to be seen.

their attempt in our sister forum seems to have failed and whatever forum they try to start will probably be bots posting.

I am glad the forum is PG15 if that's how some want to see it. I hope it brings in newbies

Re: Forum gone quiet?

Quieter for sure, less nasty, I agree...but I do feel a bit too over-swung back from where it had got to.

I hope we can get to the middle ground closer to where it started; arguments for sure, but not personal/toxic.

I was on here (old deleted name) just before I came to CH (first time), when the forum was young (pre-Local). Like MattyRedSox I found the advice invaluable to get me started here. It was not however 100% warm and fuzzy place - got told a couple of times to "use Google" or "RTFM" (had to look that one up...

On balance I think it is softer place than at the start, but perhaps not so much casual traffic as a result?

To be fair, most of that was happening before too.

Although there were two distinct groups butting heads all the time. Based on observation, 50% lefties, 40% righties and 10% like me, in the middle or fluid based on the subject.
