Forum gone quiet?

The two rounds of defrocking and all the drama that went with it seems to have changed something here. It feels more like a geriatric ward
No more passionate discussions any more It all seems PG15.

My request to all defrocked mods from the past (yes both sets) and their respective crews is to come back as members and take part. Oh! and if a rival forum(s) is(are) being set up, then let me know, so I can post on all of them

Have a nice day.

Your favourite EF poster

I saw a dead mountain goat being carried down from a peak the other day. The two hunters were preparing it to be loaded into a tiny cable car. The hunt had taken two days and the young hunters spent the night in a biwak on the mountain. They got a permit to kill a 4 1/2 year old goat and succeeded. They said it was hard work and they wouldn't do it again but it was quite a sight.

The way I see it we've gone 2-3 full pendulum swings of extremes in recent times, none of them entirely healthy.

I've seen more new posters lately and a more community spirit arising. Bullying and hostility are being kept in check, which may keep some posters from posting some interesting opinions or statistics. It's going to take time to find the right balance but I think we're on our way.

I do hope previous mods come back and join in on discussions again. They had good ideas and interesting opinions.

I don't understand your point? You can have healthy civilized drama/debate, it does not have to be personal war movie style drama. That was my point from the post you quoted

Well I don't know anyone here offline, so I take your word as you seem to know them, you can be kind and still debate, no? Like me

I hear that after every EF drama Hopefully the forum picks up more as I like the combination of info and debate, right now, the forum seems too quiet. Maybe people are busy getting their winter coats out

Re: Forum gone quiet?

I notice a number of people who used to post regularly but ceased in recent months are now drifting back.

The number of newbies asking questions about Switzerland seems to be thriving.

I do not miss those posts that were just intended to inflame opinions.

Some may see it as the signal:noise ratio finally getting back to something approaching "reasonable".

This isn't true for everyone, and especially not true for those who just want to inflame others instead of having a debate.

The point was putting one EFer words slightly out of context for the sake of fun, sorry You're right, we can have nice debates without going down the crazy road.

I know very few people offline and they're relatively young when compared to Swiss average. Totally expected because we're filling the place of workers the local population cannot supply.

From the online community, one of the crazies claimed to live in Spain and still have strong opinions on covid policy in CH because some grand children live here.......grand children is the keyword here.

Re: Forum gone quiet?

As an analogy... Would you rather go to a party full of people arguing, or would you rather go to a party full of people getting along and enjoying themselves?

I guess some people do enjoy arguing with strangers on the internet, but for myself, that's really not how I prefer to spend my time. There is still some debate here now and then, but thankfully it seems to be in the form of "friendly debate" or "we can agree to disagree" rather than the deliberate provoking and persistent targeting, etc. that was going on.

I certainly don't miss seeing people being called "sheep" or constantly being accused of being "hysterical" if they take a pandemic seriously and/or are not against the Covid vaccines, etc. It's nice to see people be able to have intelligent, calm discussions here without so many threads becoming dominated by the same argument(s) repeated ad infinitum.

I'm positively surprised about the recent firewood thread. I totally prefer sharing knowledge and invitations to barbecue together over passionate debate and being called mindless sheep https://www.englishforum.ch/daily-li...wood-vaud.html

Re: Forum gone quiet?

I don't mind heated political discussions ... but with Covid-19, things simply got out of hand.

So many of us were far away from our loved ones, had lost loved ones, been ill ourselves or were just flat out scared. The now less active EFers regularly belittled these forum members concerns, baited them or championed this insensitive behaviour. Now they are probably pouting about "censorship" in a corner somewhere and I hope they can return to the forum once they have recovered and contribute with more empathy.

It all just became too toxic, for both sides.

Personally I’d kill all of the political debate, particularly that pertaining to matters outside of Switzerland. From what I can see, it is the cause of most of the issues over the years.

I would say a party where everyone is making out Problem is that there are always people who don't get any action, get jealous and start a fist fight
