Threads larger than my screen. Can it be prevented?

Is there anyway to prevent large images from being uploaded?

Hate it when a thread's text runs off the right side of my computer screen only because someone has uploaded a large photo.

No.

More modern forum software would make images responsive to screen size.

Can the mods do anything? Resize or reject the photos perhaps.

Re: Threads larger than my screen. Can it be prevented?

It annoys me immensely too.

I have been known to delete oversized photos when I see them as they often make threads unreadable.
It is possible for us to resize photos but I don’t know how to do it on my iPad which is what I mostly use for EF.

The solution, the right solution anyway, would be to update the forum software. The version of vBulletin we're using was released in 2004.

That’s outside my remit unfortunately.

Indeed. I'd pitch in some money if we could get the attention of the folks at the Local to upgrade us, but it is my understanding that their administrators put their focus elsewhere.

It's USD360/year for vBulletin's middle-tier cloud-based solution. I bet we could get ten folks to commit to USD36/year pretty easily.

...not to start another "the Local doesn't pay attention to us!" thread...

This time it was a super-helpful thread about heating. The minor inconvenience of extra-scrolling is nothing compared to the informative answers given there.

The "funny" thing is, the limits for image attachments are ridicolously low, and we have a support thread for that... but if you link an externally uploaded picture, then it can be huge at the point of breaking the readability, so we have the worst of both worlds

I'm afraid the only thing the mods could do is edit the post, remove the IMG tags and leave just the bare link for people to clic.

Re: Threads larger than my screen. Can it be prevented?

Not sure if it would work with an iPad, but I usually use the program called Paint to re-size photos (the program came with my Windows 10). There are also free websites people can use for that, such as

https://picresize.com/

I normally use my PC screen for the EF, so I resize images for that, but I've wondered before how that size translates for someone viewing through a phone screen or if the relative proportions would remain intact.

It’s only the second page (for me) of that thread which is affected.
It is incredibly annoying to have to scroll left and right all the time to be able to read the whole sentences.
That thread doesn’t particularly interest me and I have nothing useful to contribute to it so I just avoid reading it now. I didn’t delete the enormous photo as it might be of use to the OP and others.

Maybe someone should set-up and English Forum 2.0 - that has no links to the local, then we can all migrate to it!

I've thought about that but it'd end up with two English Forums and a fragmented community.

I wouldn't mind organizing the migration, even laying out the first year of costs, but if the Local won't support the migration by providing sufficient access to the current forum's software/database it would cause more harm than good.

If it happens again: you can edit the post and replace

and the link will stay available for everybody.
