English Forum is nothing more than a virtual pub. You can walk in and out any time you like and join in conversations at your own risk. Some of what is said is true but there is a lot of BS and unverified statements. And you need at least a partially thick skin to deal with the regulars. I helped Mark build this forum, and it would be good to see it be a "reputable establishment".
If you walk into EF like walking into a Pub, you shouldn't have any problems. Oh, and the beer is free, always has been

It’s all about playing the ball, not the player. Specifically staying with the subject and not resorting to personal insults.
A forum legend called me an idiot when I posted something s/he didn’t like. Didn’t attempt to discuss or argue the point, just insult.
Ya, ya sticks and stones and all that but I was displeased that a poor attempt to shut me up was aloud to go unchallenged. I subsequently ignored them and don’t see their childish posts anymore.
Perhaps my own fault as I didn’t complain directly but just put a comment on the thread.
This place is often called toxic, for good reason.

This place is often called toxic, for good reason. | | | | | You should report it if that happens. We don’t see every post on every thread, there are some threads I rarely look at as it’s not a topic that interests me but other mods have different interests and are involved in those threads.
If you report it all mods receive it in an email and one if them can act when it’s appropriate to do so even if they haven’t seen the post.

A further thought is that two mods, after consulting, should be able to issue a yellow card. Said yellow card serving as a warning, nothing else. Three (or possibly five) should be able to issue a red card including a 48hr cooling off period.

Some forum veterans treat most newbies like that. | Quote: | | | | | It’s all about playing the ball, not the player. Specifically staying with the subject and not resorting to personal insults.
A forum legend called me an idiot when I posted something s/he didn’t like. Didn’t attempt to discuss or argue the point, just insult. | | | | | That was me, I believe. Your argument was wrong but that wasn't the problem - your apparent utter contempt for cyclists (which you tried to pretend you didn't have) was the problem.
It wasn't the ball - it was the player. It was you.
Having seen car drivers use their cars as weapons against cyclists and heard of some horror stories on the same theme, I took you to task.
But if you want to act all adult about it - how about you apologise for your attitude and then change it?

Three (or possibly five) should be able to issue a red card including a 48hr cooling off period. | | | | | You click on the red warning triangle at the top of the post and then type your message in the box.
Hit send and your message is sent as an email to all mods.
We have the infraction system which was introduced briefly for a time and was one of the reasons FMF was made a mod which then ultimately led to the big forum overhaul.
We could potentially look into reinstating it with clear guidelines in place. We currently use short cooling off bans for that purpose which also require the agreement of two or more mods.

I'm both happy and saddened to be left out. | Quote: | | | | | Just to be clear one one thing - totally unrelated to the previous 100 or so messages - you become a forum 'veteran' or 'legend' simply by posting a lot - it has zero to do with voting, nominations, a special club - and what you post doesn't even have to be useful....

Some of the "legends" are less active than they used to be, some members hit veteran after less than a year of posting.
Then to confuse issues there are returned posters, one of who is a legend again posting 5 times a day.

The infraction system can work quite well. It keeps a clear record of infractions and the post for which they were handed down.

Seriously, don't the mods have enough tools and can just apply as they see fit? We can of course try to implement some social credit scheme, but seeing on what tech this fine forum here generally runs, maybe we should stick to what we have.
And I wonder what system would have been able to track the "bullying" the OP had to suffer from.
