Recent Minor DNS Outage

Some of you may have noticed that there was a minor outage to this forum (and hundreds of thousands of other sites using the same DNS provider) about 30 minutes ago.

Most of you should have been asleep, but for those of you who were suffering withdrawals, I hope you were able to find something else to do until it came back online.

The outage was not caused by the host, or the server, or the network, or anything within control, but by a DNS issue with everydns.com (who currently hold the records for this site). There are steps being taken to spread the load of the DNS over other providers so that this does not happen again. DNS outages are rare, but severe when they hit, so steps will be taken to minimise any potential outages like this in the future.
The following 4 users would like to thank RobertF for this useful post:

Thanks for the explanation. I was mystified as the .ch root servers were alive (I could reach all the other .ch sites I tried). Long time since I dealt with DNS.

Any idea whether the failure was technical or a DDS attack?

Update! March 23, 2009: EveryDNS is back online after a one hour outage. Our first in years. A full write-up is forthcoming but as of right now, all domains are back online and steps will be taken to ensure this doesn't ever occur again.

source: http://www.everydns.com/
The write-up will be probably be found later on their support page: http://support.everydns.com/portal
