Omtatsat makes me laugh (not at him, but through his quirky wit). As a result, he's one of my favourite posters, even though I don't agree with some of his opinions.

If someone has an amusing, or heart-warming story - I want to thank them for it, rather than agree with them.

That's my point.

"Thanks" is better as it's more multi-purpose. You may not agree with a person's point of view but they can still write a great post.

I think it's generally not that difficult to tell whether a post is broadly appreciated, or not, just from the gerneral context of the continuing conversation.

On another forum I'm on they didn't have the "thanks" feature but they introduced it just to reduce the clutter caused by people posting things like "I agree" or "I appreciate" without adding anything else. In other words, this function can help reduce the clutter and hence make it easier to follow a conversation. If we used those buttons in that vein rather than for settling scores, life would be much easier.

I don't see the need for groans/dislikes or red blobs. I've used the groan function only once (on a post that's now deleted, so no idea why I groaned it!) and never assigned red blobs.

Well then, you are obviously thanking them because they made a thought-provoking, well-written post. Groans are generally for when someones post make you feel disdain and/or gives you a negative reaction of some kind.

So you don't use the system how it's meant to be used, and have never groaned or red blobbed anyone, for fear of offending people you have never met? Some may also see that as lacking the strength to be honest and convey what you actually think. After all, there is a clear difference between using it and abusing it.

Seems like I'm no longer unworthy. Wow that's a relief!

In 10 years I’ve only given 1 groan and it was because I found the post upsetting.
Otherwise it’s thanks or silence.

I still love EF and I find it comforting like an old arm chair, a cup of tea and a book. Even if we have heated debates, it’s still a quirky nice place with old familiar faces. Lots of reasons for thanks and green blobbies.

I wish I had reached this level of wisdom but I am a choleric, always have been. (and my addiction to coffee does not help at all lol)
