SPAM Advertisements in Englishforum

Hello,

I logged in into EnglishForum after 2months break and saw more spam advertisements here than before. Is it unavoidable to keep Forum running?

Re: SPAM Advertisements in Englishforum

I think there has been lesser incidents of spam particularly we have more Spam Hammers as well as Moderators ensuring that SPAMs do not live long if ever they make it past the CAPTCHA system we have in place.

The spammers are smarter though.

Re: Adverts on EF

There is currently an add on for a chatroom/dating agency showing young, attractive, single women.

i am wondering how this is going to effect our stats

It is better than the ads from a related company I kept getting on Facebook. For about 2 months the only ads I got were for "Meetic Gay" and they were flash ads with a slideshow picture after picture of shirtless men. I had to reassure my wife that Facebook did not know something she didn't.

I think I was more productive during those months because I stopped Facebooking at work!

Note to Admin. I think it'd be better if when clicking on the ad you're taken to a new tab or window
They opened in a new window for me, using Vista. Ads don't interfere with main site so no problem.

It's better than a subscription or no site.

do you visit any other sites with advertising on them? This is part of the monetisation of services people are providing on the Internet.

That's life (certainly in this cycle of the Internet).

It's not like you have to see them, save your login with the checkbox and keep the cookie and you should not see them. There is also technology to "hide" them.

The burning question for me, though - how can you not visit the site for two months?

Re: Adverts on EF

Is there a guideline as to who can advertise on the EF? I know of some ads which have been blocked, presumably by the admin.

It's decided case-by-case, but one general rule is that we don't wish to advertise for the 'competition', e.g. gl*cals whose ads were removed from EF a couple weeks ago. We don't try to advertise on their site and prefer they don't advertise on ours.

And I don't think we've had trouble with any obscene or 'adult' ads coming up, but if we did we'd probably block those too. (Again, this has to be done on a case-by-case basis - so if you see something objectionable please let us know.)

Re: Adverts on EF

I received an e-mail from this company:

The Local Europe AB
Gjörwellsgatan 28
112 60 Stockholm
Sweden

trying to sell me advertising space on EF.

Is this legit?

I am happy to forward the whole letter to those in charge.

Concerning ads... I thought Mark was really against the idea of ads wasn't he?

Re: Adverts on EF

the local owns EF so I would say it's kosher.

Mark was against ads but I believe this was back in the day when he had time and money to keep EF as he wanted it. Who knows really where his thoughts would lie on this topic today, if he was around, married and with a job to keep him busy all day.

Re: Adverts on EF

Ad's on each page opened now as well ? when i go into a discussion onto something there is an add at the top and the bottom of the page. Not sure if this is new.

There is a difference between advertising to keep something going and advertising to make a profit. I would say if all those ad's are paid then EF should be in the latter now I would have thought.
