Can we start deleting/merging salary/lifestyle threads?

Seriously. It's getting out of hand. How about one big thread or just start deleting new ones? What would you do if people kept asking the same thing about changing drivers licenses?

They do (keep asking about licences) anyway, don't they?

The other type of thread is the "my permit has/will be expiring, how long can I continue to fleece - sorry - stay in Switzerland illegally)?"

Re: Can we start deleting/merging salary/lifestyle threads?

The threads will stop when someone takes the time to make a "Guide to salaries and living costs in Switzerland" thread, detailing average copsts of various popular items, and expected living standards from various grades of salary. Then sticky it at the top of the relevant secitons, and highlight it if need be.

I suggest the people who organise this are the ones who are moaning the most about it.

Do you seriously want to give the whingers mod powers? You haven't thought that through.

Re: Can we start deleting/merging salary/lifestyle threads?

You can also look at it differently...

Threads about whether a certain salary is enough are actually the reason why this forum was founded. To help people new to Switzerland or people who are considering moving here. Same goes for the million-and-1 should I import my car posts, this is why this forum was founded.

Looking at it from this angle, shouldn't we immediately delete all the England / clothes-wear-out-at-the-knees / which-movie-do-you-like threads ?

My 5 rappen...

You just have to make and post a thread, no mod powers needed. The real mods will do the rest.

agree. forum is useful to help others, if you don't want to help, that's fine - just ignore the thread. and with topics such as "is 125k enough to live on in Basel" they're not hard to spot and avoid.

I doubt this would stop people starting new threads - it seems to take some time before people learn to use the search engine (!)

It's original thread title was "Info needed" (hard to avoid) but fortunately one of the Mods changed it.

Re: Can we start deleting/merging salary/lifestyle threads?

When you have all been around longer and got greyer hair and more wisdom, you will start to notice another trend and that is, threads that complain about threads dealing with the same topics, ad nauseum.

Back in my day when the forum was young and Politicians never philiandered all the threads were fresh and bright and new; everyone was happy and we all froliked along.
Then we got threads that dealt with the same topic over and over again, where can I get self-raising flour, why is Switzerland so much worse than my country, what permit will I get...and then a new darker trend began which caused much disharmony....the threads that complained about the threads which re-hased the same questions.
There was much nashing of teeth and wailing to the Gods and in the end we all realised that we don't really care and it all goes around and around, younger excited members join and find the same annoyances and problems that the old grisled hardened forumers have already accepted.

Re: Can we start deleting/merging salary/lifestyle threads?

What we need is some kind of Swiss expat budget web app.

You input:

Expected Salary
Single/Couple/Family
Number of kids
Which town you'll be living in
International Organisation, yes/no?

The app then adds it all up, divides by the number you first though of and then issues a solemn judgement ranging from "Poor you, best renegotiate" to "Can I cadge a lift on your private jet?"

Actually having such a sticky is a good idea. Anyone joining the forum should get a list of these crucial life changing stickies as part of the automated welcome message. It should include salary/lifestyle one, how speeding fines work here, the B permit processing time crystal ball hints, and whether spouses of various permit holders can work. And maybe one sticky just to explain how to use the search function and not clutter the forum .

Edit: Ok, GG has covered it already while I was typing!

Thanks!

Actually the app's judgement/advice could be determined by your family status, e.g.

Single on ???k - You will have enough for weekend drinks, the occasional meal out and some skiing trips
Family on ???k - You will have enough for some family skiing trips

Re: Can we start deleting/merging salary/lifestyle threads?

There is a kind of application where people can find such information...it is called Google. This is a bit of a tangent, but any one who wants to take the effort could find the average salary list by industry from the Swiss government, do a mock shopping trip on the Migros Web site, and find out the average rental costs in XYZ municipality.

Likewise reading the forum for enough time will get you this info. Some people like to give up too easily.

Other options:

Single on ???:

Can afford monthly visit to Swiss brothel.
Can afford Swiss girlfriend.
Can afford to drink spirits.

Family on ???:

Husband can afford monthly visit to Swiss brothel.
Husband can afford wife and kid.
Husband can afford impending divorce.

The possibilities are endless.
