A ban on mooching [on this forum]

I think there should be all out ban on people asking for free stuff on this forum. In the last few weeks I have seen requests for bikes, tvs, dvd players even electric guitars for heavens sake. By all means there should be a free section for people to get rid of stuff but all tight asses should either wait patiently for free stuff, offer a reasonable price for a wanted item or heaven forbid, buy it themselves from the shop.

Any one else on the same page with me on this one ?

Re: A ban on mooching [on this forum]

no. i think re-use is a good thing. if somebody says: i would like an exercise bike for free and i have one lying around unused - it could prompt me to get rid of it. win-win for all.

as with all threads - don't like it, then don't read it. no need to get annoyed.

You think there are moochers now? Check out this post from way back when... Gave me a good laugh back then, and still does.

probably....but not me. Why shouldnt someone ask first if someone has what they need kicking around before breaking the bank? re-use is a good thing. Why are you so eager to create more rules for this forum?

Re: A ban on mooching [on this forum]

I think it's fine to ask - some members (like me) have masses of stuff we don't use but never think offering on here - but I'd prefer the asker to ask politely. Still no-one has to give them anything so I suppose it is up to the two parties concerned.

Anyone want 3 years of National Geographic Magazines, English fiction books...

I am the king of recycling, but I think it would be better to at least offer something, either a beer or a couple of bucks...you might get it for free anyway. And I have used the free section, to both give stuff away and I have got some neat stuff as well. Reuse, recyle, but dont be a mooch...

Re: A ban on mooching [on this forum]

I have heaps of stuff lying around....but it's really annoying when you post a list of stuff and people don't quite need it 'right now'....

I'd rather see people ask...and me think, 'oh yeah, I've got one of those'...

And I'm more than happy to loan things (for example, the unused baby car seat) for a few weeks...than for someone else to have to go and buy one...

I don't have any family and few friends here in Switzerland - it takes time to build that up in a new country...normally they would be where I would get an endless supply of free stuff...house fulls of the stuff !

Re: A ban on mooching [on this forum]

We used to have this cool thing before I came here and it's called Freecycle www.freecycle.org this was a place you could advertise stuff you wanted or didn't want and people would match up. Its a great idea as I am sure that I often pass people going to OBI to buy something at the same time as I take the same thing to the dump. how often have you seen someone throwing something out and you are just too shy to say, "hey, may I have that"

As far as a couple of beers go, we gave an old digital camera to an art student and she brought us a lovely little drawing a couple of weeks later. So kind

freecycle Rules state that you can't charge to keep second hand goods traders off

A member here once posted they were looking for an older Mac keyboard (not the new flat ones). It got me to thinking that I might have one in the basement so I went for a look. 15 minutes later I found stuffed away in a corner a bag which containted a "never used" older model Mac keyboard in it. Cheeky member now happy and me happy too as I now have one less unwanted and unused article stored in my basement.

If you were to put a dollar value on all the advice on this forum it would seriously distort the GDP figures for switzerland and has the potential to interfere with the entire eurozone... best to leave it as it is.

Re: A ban on mooching [on this forum]

you know i one bought something off someone on this forum for about 15 bucks, it was probably wort about 30. Then about 2 weeks later advertised a free mattress and another user wanted it. This user was being all weasily about it in PMs, and when they finally came to pick it up it ended up being the same person under a different member name who came to pick it up.
All I thought after they left was "the coulda at least given me my 15 bucks back"
