Reporting messages

I read the sticky concerning the changes in the Marketplace, and all is good. Message received (for all I use the marketplace, that is)

Anyway, I noticed how we are asked to report () messages to Mods to ask for them to be closed. When you click on this within a message, you are told

Quote:
Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts.
which to me sounds a little harsh and thus off-putting . If this is also to be used as a routine channel to request mod assistance for a variety of reasons, perhaps it should also say so.

Re: Reporting messages

I agree with nqlnl. This is a much more discrete way of closing out old threads.

Heck, you could even suggest that threads in Marketplace could be closed by the OP. That would a) solve this dilemma and b) solve the dilemma of hijacked threads.

Of course giving the OP b) will lead to new annoyances

Well that's a case by-case situation. Mainly I'm referring to the stipulation that threads in the Marketplace can be closed by request via

To me, the icon, followed by the message displayed give the impression of a panic button: do not push until absolutely necessary.

Often it's used to inform us that a thread can safely be closed, as the item is no longer available, or the family has found a nanny, or what have you.

Re: Reporting messages

I suppose the original phrasing was to stop reports of 'he isn't being nice to me in this post' going to all the Mods every time someone felt hard done by. In a normal PM, only one Mod is sent the post and can decide whether to take action or not.

Re: Reporting messages

In several threads, mods have recommended using the Report Post button for a wider range of reasons than listed on the message.

It seems to be a sensible idea to reword this more generally.

Re: Reporting messages

I agree - in most forums that symbol or button means "report" in a negative sense, generally speaking. If its use is wider here then it might be a good idea to make the symbol resemble something more akin to "contact" or "alert". My 2p anyway...

Re: Reporting messages

OK, suggested icons please?

FWIW I'm not sure making it say "Contact" is such a good idea. If you do that, I guarantee people will use it to try and get hold of the poster rather than the mods.

(There's already a "Contact Us" link at the bottom of every page - pretty clearly unassociated with any one post, thread or subforum - and we get a steady trickle of emails from people who thought clicking "Contact Us" was a good way to send a PM/reply to a thread/start a new thread.)

Re: Reporting messages

So "contact us" goes to the mods, and not the webmaster? good to know.

So essentially "contact us" is the same thing as the report button at the top of each post...

Re: Reporting messages

The icon is fine imo... it's worked on a zillion forums since e-time immemorial.

The reason the default wording: "Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts." was added was to stop abuse, or also surprisingly commonly people using it to actually reply to threads (something which I never understood).

It's really a multi-purpose tool to alert moderators to anything you deem need bringing to their attention... duplicate threads, spam, abuse etc etc.

Re: Reporting messages

MaryThomi, they reach the same people, but the mechanism is different. The "Contact Us" form sends an email to the EF team account (mods+admin); the "Report Post" button sends an automated email (like a thread notification) to each mod/admin's personal inbox.

For issues related to a single post or thread, which don't necessarily need a reply, please use "Report Post."
If you have a more general concern, need a reply, have difficulty logging into your account, etc. please use the "Contact Us" form instead.

I think the icon is fine. Perhaps the onmouseover could read "request moderator assistance" or something along those lines.

Re: Reporting messages

Some members, especially newer ones might attempt to circumvent the 10 posts 1 week rule and look up the membership list and send unsolicited PMs. Report the PM for consideration by the Moderators.

Fascinating ... I think of myself as an experienced user, and often wished there were such a mechanism, unaware that one actually exists. Idle reading of old threads on a slow night is sometimes most informative

Snap. that makes two of us learning something new.

More directly related to this thread, are there any plans to amend the wording as suggested in this thread? I think that it would be beneficial for members, but could result in more posts being reported.

Re: Reporting messages

Thanks to all Members who use this facility to give mods a heads up on posts for their various reasons. When a post is reported, mods receive an Email with the message concerned and we can then look into whether action needs to be taken. Most of the time it does, sometimes we let things be.

Either way, the fact Members make the effort to help us keep some order on the Forum is appreciated.
