If you don`t like the movie, walk out.
To be fair C, the analogy's not quite right.

I think the OP was enjoying the movie until prople started talking on their mobile phone, rattling their crisp packets and chucking M&Ms around the theatre.

He's still enjoying the film, but is getting fed up of the background noise.

Why should he leave?

I ain't throwin' no stones. I'm a sinner too.

EDIT : Erm. Ignore all that. I'm in the wrong thread. Eejit

I suppose that should be in another forum and perhaps would be hit by the same rules as the advertisers?

If anything, the new rules are forcing new members to be creative resulting in much more work for the mods.

Well as an extremely new arrival to Switzerland and this forum, I thought I might be able to get a replacement for my laptop on this forum since the craigslist community here is more than a little bit stale. My laptop, which broke not even a half day after I got off my plane, is a pretty critical part of my work plan AND my masters thesis. As a student who is almost completely broke, and nowhere near recieving my first paycheck, I can't afford a new laptop, especially at Swiss prices. I have no means of getting any money an time soon, don't speak enough german to find alternative sites/ appropriately handle transactions, and need a replacement computer within the next week. While this may help prevent spam (I understand I used to administrate several forums), this policy is more than a little bit frustrating to me. To make matters worse, I respond to somebody elses post looking for a laptop saying that I need one too, and within an hour my post is deleted for threadjacking. So honestly I'm not a fan of this regulation. My circumstances may be a little bit unusual, but it's certainly not helping anything. I have nothing to sell here anyways, but if I did I would find this regulation just as frustrating. I would not want to post anything I legitamtely had to sell on here if I had to wait 7 days and pretend to be part of a community to do so. It will more than certainly discourage people from joining or contributing to thE
marketplace.

also sorry for typos etc, typing on an mp3 player is kinda hard

So people can spam in Employment but not in Housing.

Makes no sense to me.
Evidently there isn't a problem in Employment but there is one in Housing.

I don't view the Mods as Fascists, so I can't imagine that they would be asking for further restrictions if there wasn't a good reason for it.

Note, I would never allow this argument from my government but I only trust them as far as I can throw them.
Plus this isn't as important as the various rights that are granted by the constitutions and restricted by the practices of our governments. At least, not quite.

Besides, it's not that hard to generate 10 valid posts and wait for 7 days, but Spammer and their bots are less likely to be that patient.

Re: Have 10 posts or more

Having just experienced the new rule for 10 posts before I could advertise, I would say that it seemed reasonable to me. I've been a member for a few years, but rarely posted. The Forum for me has been a great tool for finding information in English, and I think I had two posts to my credit when I tried to sell some things in a hurry the other day. It was a bit frustrating for a moment, but I could understand having to at least introduce myself after these years of lurking and benefitting from the useful information available here.

So I did that, and struck up a conversation with a friendly member who had a few questions about the items for sale that I'd mentioned in my intro. In a short time, my post count exceeded the required ten, and my for-sale ads could then be posted. The experience was actually quite nice.

If I was a buyer, I'd probably be comforted by the fact that sellers have to show up a bit in order to participate in the marketplace. It's really not asking for much.

On the other hand, there's the question of having to be a member for a week before an ad will post. Although that could be frustrating to someone with little time to sell things, I guess that's the prerogative of the Forum and its members to create a marketplace where sellers are somewhat known members of their community. I think that's an ok thing.

There are other places to sell, but as a non-german speaker, it's not always so straightforward. I can't use ricardo for example, so I feel a bit dependent on the English Forum. There are probably others out there in similar situation, but in the end I agree with letting the community know a bit about a seller.

i agree, it should be free. market place ads are interesting... as long as its not spam
(- i guess the point is to avoid spam, I dont know if this has been a problem admittedly...)

does this count as one of my 10 now?

No, we mods just sit around and make up these rules for the fun of it...

...yes, there is an ongoing spam problem. The marketplace rules do help a lot, and spam that's posted elsewhere is usually zapped before too many people even notice it, thanks to the vigilant Spam Deputies round here - but yes, it is a problem.

Besides outright spam, there are quite a few people whose only conception of EF seems to be as a marketplace. The minimum posting requirement encourages these people to at least have a look around the rest of the forum and contribute a little bit. (Who knows, they might like it!) If someone isn't willing to do that - if all they really want is to sell their stuff or advertise for a job - then there are already loads of other sites where they can do that for free... it's not really a niche that needs filling.

I would like to see more options in the poll. I think 10 posts is too little as the example of HB above shows already: The new poster is willing to make ten crap posts in order to be able to sell something. Not even an attempt to join the community and try to make ten reasonably serious posts.

I once suggested 50, which might be a bit high, maybe 25? In any way, the hassle to just do it to sell something should be high enough that people who only want to use a free market place actually bugger off to one of the market place websites like piazza.ch or others... I find "our" market place a nice to have add on for active forum members, not a service for the public who want to save the costs of homegate or autoscout.
Being a market place isn't the main point of the EF. If you want to sell stuff you'll probably find more buyers on Ebay or Ricardo anyway. EF is a community and the option of selling stuff is just a service on the side. It's not a right. That's why I think it's okay if the bar is set fairly high. If anybody has special circumstances they can contact a mod and the mods should be allowed to relax the rules on a case by case basis if the person has a legitimate reason for special treatment.

If you only love EF for the non-market place stuff (quite fair enough i think!) , why not just avoid the market place section?

Because I consider many people on EF to be friends and I make a difference between trading stuff with friends and buying stuff off scammers.

Hi There,

The rule is to make 10 posts and 7 days of membership. Either of them is enough or I have to satisfy both the conditions.
Do I have to make 10 posts anywhere in the forum or just market place to be able to start a new thread.

Regards,
Arnold.
