Have 10 posts or more

I have always liked English forum for the ease of using it. Somehow the latest trend on the forum is getting towards imposing more strict rules.
I was a bit surprised on the announcement for the market place:

In order to post in the Marketplace, you need to first meet the following criteria:
  • Have 10 posts or more
  • Been a member for 7 days or longer
Does this really help?
What if the person intends to leave switzerland and is posting in a hurry?
Should he wait for 7 days or keep spamming with 10 additional posts before getting to the point? Should he be not allowed, to make use of such a nice forum here?
Personally I see Sale messages more helpful than introductions.Atleast someone might get what he is in dire need of.
Moreover there are other loopholes so whats the point?
I know the moderators do a great job and the intentions behind the announcements are good. But I like the idea of freedom.

My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular. ~Adlai Stevenson,

Re: Have 10 posts or more

Def against it as I stated here:

http://www.englishforum.ch/800456-post6.html

and as we can see, people are already missing out as a result of the new rules:

http://www.englishforum.ch/800520-post24.html

[But of course, I appreciate the reasoning behind it.]

Re: Have 10 posts or more

I think it's a step forward, so no more treating EF like fleabay. Many forums operate a 'mod reviewed' number of posts, here you just can't use 1 section of the forum... hardly a big deal.

He/she has to meet both requirements... so spamming 10 posts does him/her no good.

It is a good thing I think. There are plenty of other places to go where people can to sell their sh*t.

So people can spam in Employment but not in Housing.

Makes no sense to me.

Re: Have 10 posts or more

I would like to see more options in the poll. I think 10 posts is too little as the example of HB above shows already: The new poster is willing to make ten crap posts in order to be able to sell something. Not even an attempt to join the community and try to make ten reasonably serious posts.

I once suggested 50, which might be a bit high, maybe 25? In any way, the hassle to just do it to sell something should be high enough that people who only want to use a free market place actually bugger off to one of the market place websites like piazza.ch or others... I find "our" market place a nice to have add on for active forum members, not a service for the public who want to save the costs of homegate or autoscout.

I think housing is special and should not be subject to the rules. I would say the same for Employment, using recent post there as example.

Any spam will be deleted... hence they'll need to be reasonably good posts.
Seriously I think a bigger deal is being made of this than is necessery. The Marketplace is a nice to have, but EF could function equally well without it. And I'm not sure about others, but I'm a lot more comfortable buying from members who have some sort of forum history. You can tell a lot about a person from the quality of their posts and the way they act towards others.

We have our rules, and really cannot be blamed if someone fails to plan. Ask an established member ( 10 posts and 1 week membership is all that is required ) to post, though not encouraged.

Quote:

He / She ought to wait, and can freely post in other sub forums.

Quote:

See above .. he / she can freely browse all areas, not to mention read up on all those Stickies and FAQs as well as make some posts, hopefully decent ones, in sub forums that are permitted.

Intros are not compulsory but useful. Members made this community, and not many are keen in allowing the forum to be taken advantage of by drive-by advertisers / posters,

i couldn't agree with you more. Housing and jobs are scarce commodities in Zurich and everything we can do to help people should be done. For me they are definitely in a different category to general goods and I can see the reasoning there.

Having said that a first time poster recently posted some excellent quality goods at very fair prices. Assuming the photos are real i will be collecting some good quality furniture shortly.

Overall I'm of the opinion that if it offends you so much, don't read it. There's more than one way to contribute to a community. One of which is me/anyone getting a good deal.

People repeating the same question over and over though... Don't get me started!

Re: Have 10 posts or more

I don't think having to wait a whole week after joining! to post an advert for free on a forum with a readership as wide as that of the EF is too much of a hardship.

If it is, then one can always pay to advertise elsewhere.

Re: Have 10 posts or more

But really the question is how many times did someone come on to the forum to sell something and then stayed for good....

How many times were we confronted by an abuser who came on to the forum to sell something dodgy and who the forum didn't take down!! This for me is another rule when we really never needed one.

Perhaps its an early sign of the corporation of EF to come?

It's a good job they didn't implement the "must have 0 rep or above" rule that was discussed. There might be a longer wait than a week.

Re: Have 10 posts or more

How about you can not post a post untill you post 10 posts Deadlock! that's it!!

or how about
The only allowed thread would be '' Introduction'' thread for the first 10 months (like L permit)
Then you have to give tests in german about threads in EF..( you get 2 more threads of your choice to pick) (like B permit, please note no kanton transfer allowed)
if you stay with the forum for more than 10 years you get c , rights on all threads
Forum membership would be mean right to vote err poll

we all are getting Very swiss
