Forum Leaders: who's who and what's what?

Just for information so you know who can do what and why....

Mark - supreme overpowered forum "Being". If it can be done, he can do it.
Lob Rockster - "moderator" rights. That means thread maintenance and banning spammers, mostly. Would love to cusomise some user titles but just isn't trustworthy
Litespeed - His name's not Greg but he's made it into the Circle of Trust. I know he's now itching to ban someone (try Mark first )

Quote:
Lob Rockster has been upped to the same status as Mark with full admin rights across the forum
Evilshell and Lou join Litespeed as Super Moderators. This will allow them zap spam and moderate in any area of the forum.
Diem and AbFab are moderators in certain forums (which has not been mentioned in this thread yet; sorry guys.
Posts that will be deleted (this is not an all-encompassing list):
  • Spam. Your Nokia phone, software, porn and drug links. You will be banned.
  • Advertisements; particularly first-post or one-post wonders. You won't be banned but will be encouraged to bring some value to the forums.
  • Slanderous and in-fighting. Not welcome for obvious reasons and is likely to be pruned - thankfully there isn't much of that
litespeed's list added:
  • Malicious, intimidating, or inciteful posts
  • Unauthorised or inappropriate disclosure of personal information
  • Explicit or inappropriate inclusion of images
  • Posts designed to inappropriately redirect members to other websites
  • Blatant use of inappropriate language
Mark's list added:
  • Ask yourself whether your new thread is posted in the correct area?
  • If starting a new thread, have you searched for threads which already discuss your topic or question? If they exist, reply to these threads instead.
  • If replying to an existing thread, is your post on-topic in that thread? If not, it may be appropriate to start a new thread for the new subject.
  • Limited profanity is ok, provided it is clever and done in good taste. Too much of anything gets tiring.
  • We all make typos and the odd spelling error. If English is your native language please at least put some effort into spelling and punctuation. Your messages will be easier to read for others.
  • Try to share information in public if possible, keep PMs for stuff which really needs to be kept private. At some point you have benefited from the information exchange of others in public, try to bear this in mind.
  • If new to the forum, read and search before your first post. The best place for your first post is in introductions.
  • If there are specific announcements or sticky threads in a given area please read them before posting there.
  • Fill in your profile information under my settings - we all like to know a little bit more about you.
  • Add an avatar (the small picture next to a poster's name) to your profile - it makes it easier for us to identify your posts.

I would also add:
  • Malicious, intimidating, or inciteful posts
  • Unauthorised or inappropriate disclosure of personal information
  • Explicit or inappropriate inclusion of images
  • Posts designed to inappropriately redirect members to other websites
  • Blatant use of inappropriate language
These could be punished by warning, banning, and/or eternal damnation (ok, this last one is not confirmed, I think comes out with the next version of Vbulletin).

Personally, I would also ban people who, from their posts, appear that their entire education was conducted via SMS.

Re: Forum Leaders: who's who and what's what?

Thanks Lob,

Yes at some point I have to write some guidelines. Generally things have worked well so far, but in the future it might be necessary to spell things out for some people. The generally unwritten rule is "don't be an idiot", which most seem capable of sticking to. Specifically:

That's about it off the top of my head

Just for info - litespeed has now been promoted to a forum mod. He will soon learn the joys of moving messages posted in the wrong areas and fighting the tide of spam...

Welcome litespeed

Re: Forum Leaders: who's who and what's what?

I forgot one point to add to the rules/suggestions:

Try to make a meaningful subject for your new thread. Meaningful subject lines make it more likely that somebody interested in your message will click on it. Additionally, the subject line is very important for search engines like google. A subject line like "For Sale" will not be effective, but "Siamese kittens for sale in Basel area" will be far more likely to get you some targeted traffic.

Litespeed is not around as much - but he's still around
Mark is not able to give too much time right now - but he's still able to comment on certain things.

Does this help?

BTW, I also babysit the server while Mark's gone. And I'm supposed to be upgrading a few things.

Great news.
Also interesting to have is to have instructions how to post a thread.
It may sound silly but I couldnt find it although I have managed to since somehow....

Where has "Lob Rockster" gone? or is he now "Lob"?
I was under the impression that if you have been around for a long time and have posted lots of messages, then it really is not advisable to change your username.
