Discussion about tagging (the guide)

This thread is the official discussion thread for the official forum guide on adding tags to your threads.

The guide itself is a closed thread, but this thread is for people to discuss aspects of the guide, or to ask any specific questions about aspects of tagging.

If you need help with any of the concepts raised in the guide, this is the thread to post those questions.

Please post your tag relations questions. I'll be happy to try and answer them.

Re: Discussion about tagging (the guide)

A couple of questions if I may:

1. There is obviously some pretty good tagging going on already to ensure that Google for example put the threads high up the ranking. What tags are used by default, and do the user-added tags take priority ?

2. Am I correct in thinking that only the creator of the thread can add any user-added tags ? Will the moderators add any themselves if the discussion takes a completely different direction, even if they stop short of renaming the thread itself ?

Thanx
dave

Re: Discussion about tagging (the guide)

Just one quick question: How do I narrow my search by searching for a combination of multiple different tags?

Re: Discussion about tagging (the guide)

AFAIK, these 'tags' have nothing to do with HTML meta tags. V-Bulletin seems to generate these automatically for each page anyway.

Also Google ignors keyword meta tags do to spamming of these.

If you click search, you'll see you can search these new tags (if you have a browser with JS running).

There are no default tags and no tags are prioritized.

Only thread owners can add tags, either at the time of thread creation or as the thread progresses. Moderators add tags as well, relevant to the subject matter and evolution of the thread.

This is also my one gripe with the tagging system. At the moment it is not possible. A suggestion has been submitted to the developers of the tag plug-in.

Don't forget that where the tags fall short, searching the forum can yield excellent results.

Since more and more parts of the forum are using javascript, if anyone is blocking it they will certainly end up with a "reduced" forum experience.

It seems that this isn't possible, since when you click on a tag, you get only messages matching that tag. We are currently asking the people who did the tag software about that point. Bear in mind that tags are done by humans, often quite poorly. Basing a search on two or more tags might produce very little or no results.

Well it's not really correct to say that there is "tagging" done by google. Google just looks at a page of text to try and figure out what is important. We help google in various ways to try and position the various elements in a way that is google friendly. Tagging is just one of these tools (and the fact that tags are exported to zoints.com).

The biggest SEO (search engine optimisation) factor is thread titles - these appear in bold close to the top of the page, and they keywords from the title are inserted directly into the URL itself. The mods are constantly changing thread titles to not only make them more friendly for busy people who don't want to see "please help" or "question" in the list of new messages, but also because this is the single biggest factor in generating inbound traffic.

That was actually addressed in the guide Dave but your assumptions are basically correct. I've asked the mods to add or change tags where they see them missing or appropriate, but have no way to track if this is actually happening. I've been doing it myself though. I've also linked the tag guide directly under the box where tags are entered on new threads, but so far tags seem to be ignored by people creating new threads. I can make them mandatory, but have been afraid this would create too much confusion and result in tags which match the subject line (i.e. not a list of words, but an entire sentence) - this has also happened.

I've written some extensions to the original system that allow me to specify individual users who can have rights to add or delete tags across the entire forum. If you think tags are a great idea and would like to have this ability to help increase the number of tags across the forum, just send me a PM.

I think its one of those things, with time more and more people will notice them and eventually get used to using them. Unfortunately however many new threads are started by new users who may not have this awareness (or click the link for the guide).

I've quoted just this section out of my previous post, realising that some people may have missed that point as it was just one part of a larger post. Since yesterday only one person requested these rights, a response which was a bit smaller than I expected.

If you think you can be responsible with these rights and would like to help out by tagging existing threads, you've nothing to lose - it doesn't cost anything. If you are already reading a particular thread it doesn't take any extra time anyway.

Re: Discussion about tagging (the guide)

Hi,

I forgot to add tags to a thread couple of threads I created. I read Mark's guide but when I click back into my threads I dont see a dialogue box to add tags . I've tried editing the post as well to see if a dialogue box for adding tags would appear then but no joy. Any suggestions? Could it be that I dont have access to add tags at all?

Does anyone know why I used to have tagging rights, but now I no longer do? I never received any message about the change, the function just disappeared one day several months ago.

Re: Discussion about tagging (the guide)

Tagging was disabled for users last fall after prank keywords were tagged. Currently only the thread starters and moderators can add and remove tags.

However I've created a usergroup with tagging rights some two months ago and if somebody wishes to help tagging threads I'll thankfully add him or them. There currently are only two regular users with full tagging rights.

Edit: On re-reading the thread: ChrisW I'm rather sure you never were member of this particular usergroup. You only had the right until it was revoked forum-wide.

Users who are interested in tagging can contact me by private message, please.
