Sub-forums based on country of origin?

Hi Adminstrators,

Thanks again for keeping this forum running?

You seem to have created this forum for people who speak/read/write English. Due to the wide spread of English across the world, I am sure that the users come from all parts of the world. Did you ever consider creating sub-forums within this site, based on the country of origin. For example, a section where you can discuss issues that are unique for Americans living in Switzerland (e.g. the tax avoidance issue), or Indians (e.g. Best schools in Switzerland for Indian children).

I believe that the site is now rich enough with content that you can open it up for some advertising revenue (e.g. the e-bay model creating a market for forum users).

Regards,

A K Nair

You might want to cross out the "put the world to rights according to me" item on the agenda for today.

Re: Sub-forums based on country of origin?

would be more useful to have subforums about Swiss towns, as we don't live in the same town.

Would be nice to have information about Zurich in one place, Zug in another one, and Geneva in a third.

Same for the members' activities.

I know, it can remember another forum...

Re: Sub-forums based on country of origin?

I guess I should say why its a terrible idea

All the indians would stay in the indian forum, then would start posting in there own language, it would be made up of 99% "how do I get a non restrictive b permit" posts, and no one else would ever go there.

Same for aussies, south africans etc etc

the way EF is setup at the moment we're all forced to integrate, even with those dirty northerners / southern softies *

we all see each others questions, events, for sale threads etc

there is also a hell of a lot of mis-information on threads, at least now there will always be someone who can set the record straight, imagine asking about permits on an indian thread in hindi, god alone knows what advice you'd get and none of the people in the know would be there to help you out.

Is that taking the UK as a single country, or as four countries?

z.B.

Jobs offered .. only for Mongolians
For Sale - only to Singaporeans

etc.

This is way different from what Mark had envisioned for the forum ie not to be divisive but inclusive.

So this site is not just for English people, or even native speakers - it's for anyone who is living in (or interested in) Switzerland and would like to communicate in English. And since we don't believe in discrimination or excluding anyone, even the Swiss are welcome too!

Re: Sub-forums based on country of origin?

I think, dividing the forum itself would not make any sense. OTOH there might be a genuine interest for a bit of social chatter amongst like-minded people, be it rabbit breeders, Ferrari drivers or people with a similar geographical/cultural background. That's, what I think, the social groups in the back of the forum could be used for by anyone?

Re: Sub-forums based on country of origin?

I think everything posted before me already perfectly rationalises why this must be kept as the "English Forum".

After all..... we are all foreigners here*.... this is already a perfect way to help each other out.

We are supposed to unite here by language, not seperate by race or ethnic group.

It is the mix that makes this great, and the diversity of opinion to find what you were looking for (and can contribute).

*with exception to the Swiss members who we also obviously encourage and appreciate their input.
