Can members "resign" and disappear?

I always assumed that the member list was everybody who had ever been on here and posted, but I was looking today for somebody who I hadn't seen for a while (odd fascination with their argumentative posts!) and they are no longer on the list.....

I assume that in order to do that, one doesn't just simply let time pass, one must write and resign, which is a spectacular form of flounce!

(Which would be in character!)

They are probably on an enforced "holiday". Banned users don't appear in the member list.

Even blowing up the servers would be an ultimately useless flounce. Everything published online is there forever in one form or another. Please be aware of this when posting.

I you want to resign, simply never log back in.
The following 3 users would like to thank Uncle Max for this useful post:

Even a name change can't erase your online past. Google knows who you are.
And employers are checking social networking websites for those embarrassing photos.
