Anger Porn

Can someone tell me the point of the recent spate of threads inviting us to get angry over puppy throwers, civilian-killing soldiers, moronic police officers?

In many cases, the offenders are going to trial or have already been convicted. Even when this isn't the case, there isn't a fat lot we can do about these particular incidents sat behind our computers in Switzerland.

I very much doubt that anyone isn't horrified by the behaviour of these louts and barbarians, so what, exactly, are we discussing?

Are these threads just an excuse to let us get righteously worked up about stuff we can't change, while conveniently ignoring the problems around us that we could change, if only we could be arsed?

Are these threads nothing better than anger porn?

Useless without picture.

If I send you a PM about it, would you answer?

This will be a great asnwer on a PM. So someone wouldn't feel ignored.

If I checked my PMs more than about once a week, then it might be, yes.

Would you like to discuss the matter in hand, though?

I think you're right but its not just here on EF. I used to subscribe to the BBC News Front Page RSS feed to read the news on the train but I stopped because practically every headline is bad news and I'm just not ready to be that miserable yet.

I think that's what we call back home; "chewing the fat".

Granted, some seem to want to promote a certain political/social agenda but I think for the most part we're just looking for a reason to get a break from that bloody excel sheet we're working on.

It builds social cohesion and releases other (especially sexual) tensions. Don't you know nuffin?

Yes. The howl of the lynch mob. At least, that's why I do it.

Btw, I think you mean self-righteously.

Re: Anger Porn

I think the criminals you mentioned are killing in the name of US people. That's a fact. So US people need to know what's happening.

The afghans who were killed and treated like animals, need justice (international court...but not recognized by US government...surprise!?).
By keeping silence and refusing indignation, we kill them a second time.

Re: Anger Porn

I think Misses Breakfast has it correct. Being collectively angry about drowning puppies creates a warm fuzzy group feeling and makes us feel like we are better humans.

Yes, maybe we can't change what happened but we can change this in the futur.

More you talk about it, more people get to know what is really going on. And yes it raise indignation but this is what makes people push to change things!

If you don't talk about it, it is like nothing happened or it isn't enough important to talk about it. Nothing change if it stays in the shadow.

Often I think it is a way for the participants (in the thread) to show how morally and politically correct they are.

For what purpose? What is the gain?
And this is assuming there is a moral and political norm....the fact that there are hefty discussions with groanings and bad reps, the fact that there are people from different backgrounds tells me that there is not such a norm.

Re: Anger Porn

We are the chosen voice of the masses. Our opinions and views represent the cross-culture of not only Swiss, but pan-European, western society ethnic backdrops and social hinterlands.

We are the people and the written voices of the maddening crowd, the jeering hanging party, the judges, the jury and the executioners. For we are all knowledgeable, university trained and most learned in cut and pasting techniques from the intraweb to back up all our fictive claims and fetish favored subjects.

We rules - innit?

Why do you think that they are mutually exclusive? Don't you think that people get angry specifically BECAUSE they can't do anything else, but that those are the same people that do fix what they can...

Grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

Re: Anger Porn

Purpose? I don't know, to make them feel good I guess.

Norm - well, that is when it usually gets interesting. The self-righteus OP suddenly realize that not everybody believes in the world being flat and that is usually the beginning of the end of the thread.

OK, let's talk about this. The cat-bin-woman. What did we decide we are going to do to "change this in the future"? What ideas for doing so were even so much as raised in that discussion? No, it was all about the outrage. This makes me sick, SICK I tell you, and I must tell the world that it makes me SICK. (Or else what? People will think it doesn't make you sick?) I am glad to see that it makes so many other people SICK too.

And then a few days later it was the puppy-drowning-woman, and then the drunk-hitting-cop, and...

It is not just one incident. It's a societal thing - this urge to broadcast all your feelings and reactions and have them validated by the similar broadcasts of others. Growing up on Facebook probably doesn't help. When was the last time you felt something real - some strong, deep emotion, positive or negative - and didn't tell a soul about it? Do people do that any more?
