Why can't they just start a new thread?

Why is it that some people, instead of starting a NEW thread choose to revive one from 2008, add something at the bottom and then get unsuspecting people [i.e. me] to reply to the original person making themselves look like total twats. Is it a new hobby?

[Now looking like total loon having answered to a post from 2008 about first aid courses ]

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

if it's a continuity of something, I thought it as what we are supposed to do? to ease the workload of the mods..Not to have tens of thread about the same topic. If it's too answer the op, yes i agree, it does not make any sens. Have to say I amde the mistake myseld once not reading the date..

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

If the subject os the new post is the same as the existing thread then there is no need to start a new thread. The mods would merge the threads together anyway so if all is relevant you did nothing wrong at all.

Lou (who also just posted an answer on a thread from 2008 )

Because if you start a new thread you're bound to get some moderator moving your post to the old thread.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

Actually the new poster did start a new Thread. I was the 'guilty party' as I merged the Threads. I thought it better that posts about First Aid could go together. That someone ran it partly off-track earlier wouldn't have been the end of the world, quoting from the old one on an off-topic subject after the Thread would have been back on track was unfortunate. I deleted the post of someone else who did the same thing, yours I didn't see as the Thread had already continued on the new page. If you prefer to feel 'unsilly' I could delete it for you if you can't.

It is simply a fact that someone looking for information can more quickly scan through one longer Thread than open up two or three and look through each of them. I thought the Info still relevant - my links still worked. Sorry if everyone is cross with me - the hard life of Mod.

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

Yeah, but actually this was a moan and not about forum support - I don't need any support thanks!!

It's not about having tons of posts about the same thing either - if you use the search and find your answer then you don't need a post at all do you???

And if you don't find an answer then why not start a new thread??

And yes, I get fed up of looking like a total idiot for replying to a thread that was dead 2 years ago.

Yes, OK, but I was just having a *joke* (heard of those?) forget it, it's finished. Why don't you delete the whole thread now?

Mods routinely move posts around the forum to slip up members who might be sleeping at their computers and not checking post dates found in the upper left hand corner of each post.

We find it very entertaining..

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

Dear wattsli1, I have deleted your unfortunate post. If you want it undeleting, let me know.

Many people wanting information do not search, or do not search hard enough or simply cannot find the right words to search under.
I like things tidy. At home I collect big boxes to keep little boxes in, on the Forum I merge Threads.

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

This question has been buzzing around my head for the last few days, weather to add to a post or when it is being hijacked. Someone on here (in the business and commercial section) was asking questions about starting a business, I am actually starting the same business and would have thought it a bit rude to hijack his? thread for my own needs. Or am I being too polite or add to the thread and get an ismacking from a mod if it gets too far off track? Do the mods separate threads as needed or just inform the person there post has been deleted? Your guidance is appreciated.

I'd say start your own thread ( Commercial = advert cf. Business = discussion ).

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

If it is a very similar business and any answers would apply to both of them, I'd probably add to the Thread but if I felt shaky about it, I might drop the OP a PM beforehand and ask if he minded. Then you know what he thinks and if he says OK you can both profit from answers.

A nice analogy .... to continue ..... I like things tidy too so I throw out all the boxes (big and small) because it saves space. And then if I actually need a box I buy a new one .

Honestly though, just forget it I'm not that bothered

Yes, but we are. I made this mistake recently too. I am beginning to think this site should come with a list of instructions.

For example, why are there different levels of membership? Is it necessary? I have not come across this on any of the other information/sharing sites that I use regularly. ( The Lonely Plane, Thorn Tree, being one of them.) Equality of posting and answering does not seem to cause any problems on them.

Points: I seem to be gathering points. No idea on how or why, but I discovered them yesterday. Hhhmmm, was the site orignally designed by the teacher of a class of children with challenging behaviours. Oh, okay, I'll play. Just give me the rules. ( I have noticed that both sexist and racist comments seem to be perfectly acceptable so long as one is hiding behind a non de plume.

Regarding the date issue: as it seems to trip up more than the occassional person, would it be possible to redesign the postings so that the date is more obvious....unless of course, it is actually seen as an orientation trip up for newbies.

Duh, what a good idea. Now if I could only load an imod on my phone and ask for advice I might eventually become socially acceptable........

There aren't. We're all just members, unless we're spam deputies, mods or administrators. The little titles under our names are meaningless, linked only to the number of posts we've made in on-topic areas, regardless of how much information or drivel they contain.

I presume you're referring to the little green blobbies? They are "reputation" points, also pretty meaningless, but they provide lots of entertainment for those of us who like to play with them. Click on "My Settings" and scroll down to see who gave them to you, and what lovely comments they left. Green blobbies are "good boy or girl" points. Red blobbies are "naughty boy or girl" points. Grey blobbies are attempted red blobbies by naughty boys and girls who can't give blobbies really, but think they can.

None of this is worth losing any sleep over.

Re: Why can't they just start a new thread?

Why do some treat EF as Google?

"How do I boil an egg? Looking for helpful hints ..." etc.

Grr.

Should your coopting of a thread veer too much from the OP, mods simply create a dedicated split thread for yourself. Satisfaction all around.

We really appreciate Members who search, read and continue in an old thread rather than being lazy buggers and starting a new one whilst another still breathes. Either way mods will attend but spliting a thread due to an interesting turn in conversation is far more rewarding voluntary work than flushing your toilet for you.

Thanks awfully.
