USA Route 1/ Highway 1 in Jul& Aug 2011

We have decided to take the Route 1 in the USA and travel for 3 weeks starting from San Francisco to Seattle. Has anybody travelled at this time of the year on this route? Any tips or suggestions?

Is it better to book flights in advance. Will we then have discounted rates?

Re: USA Route 1/ Highway 1 in Jul& Aug 2011

Have just taken Highway 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco as part of another trip. The Highway 1 plan was in a rental car for 3 nights 4 days.

Found Avis charged no drop off fee as the car was returned to an Avis location in the same State.

Open jaw flight we had means flew in from europe to one airport and back to europe from another airport.

It was all booked in advance - car was cheaper, I suspect the flight too.

Not this time of year - but we did it May a few years back. We upgraded to a V8 Cadillac so we could do the trip in style. The standard hire Pontiacs stand out a mile.

Stop in Carmel for coffee - at the Coffee Company.

And the road from there down to Santa Barbara is quite "enjoyable".

Just outside San Francisco you have Daly City - whose claim to fame is as the refernce point for the "Little Boxes" song - which found a new lease of life as the theme tune to Weeds.

Southbound is better. Many of the scenic overlooks and vistas are difficult to access because you'll be making blind left turns across oncoming traffic. I always regret going North because I miss so much stuff..

That is true, going south you don't need to cross the road to park to see the view.

I am not sure how much of a great road it is, in towns it is difficult to follow and frequently the road is way inland.

Re: USA Route 1/ Highway 1 in Jul& Aug 2011

Sorry, I think I missed your question here:
Travel in Jul/ Aug on Route 66, USA

I thought you were going in the summer. The risk of going during this time of year is if a Pacific storm should come. Highway 1 is prone to rockslides and mudslides during a storm.

During this time of year, I would suggest taking Route 66.

But if you are going to take Pacific Coast Highway, my favorite drive in the whole world, I would recommend these stops:

-Santa Barbara
-San Luis Obispo
-Cambria
-Heart Castle
-Big Sur
-Check out some of th wildlife reserves (Otters, seals, walruses, etc.)
-Carmel
-Pebble Beach
-Monterrey Bay - 17 Mile Drive
-Santa Cruz
-Silicon Valley(Stanford)
-San Francisco
-Sausalito
-San Rafael-Sonoma Wine Country
-Humboldt
-Eureka

(And that's just California)

Then you have
-Eugene, Oregon
-Portland, Oregon
-Olympia, Seattle

Then you might as well consider taking some island trips and Vancouver.

Thanks immense for the response. We intend spending 3 weeks. Can we change cars at different destinations depending on our plan to drive or stay....rent a car when we are driving and exchange with a mobile home to camp.

Whom and where do I contact to book the car?

If you are looking at dropping the car in another location then Avis and Hertz are your options I believe. Reason the other car rental companies are actually franchises therefore the locations and cars will not have the same owners. Avis have most of the time the better rates, Hertz a better service from the reviews I read, they might have a better rate too. You are better off renting a car and dropping it within the same US State and you do not get one way charges.

I booked though an air miles web site, but you can book direct.

Open Jaw is an expression I believe the airlines use. On expedia it is called Multiple destinations. You could try 2 one way flights.

Re: USA Route 1/ Highway 1 in Jul& Aug 2011

I lived in San Diego for a year, Los Angeles for two years and San Francisco for 10 years. If you are there for 3 weeks and travelling with teenagers, and depending on what your vacation budget allows, I would start at San Diego, rent a van with Avis or Hertz and do the trip from San Diego to Los Angeles, taking your time to stop at the various cities between San Diego and LA. Then fly from Los Angeles to San Francisco and rent a van again. The posts above have given you already great advice as to places to visit. Actually, California alone is so big, that you could spend over three weeks there. Of course, you can just do city tours, and by that I mean rent a van or car at every major city that you plan on visiting and just drive around. Plenty to keep you and your teenagers busy.

It depends on how many stops you make. You can make it from L.A. to Seattle in 16 hours.
