Recommendations for happy / funny / inspiring films (no chick flicks please)

So I'm not feeling brilliant, to put it in non-dramatic terms and find that just watching films is way to pull my mind out of repetitive thoughts for at least a few moments. I'm pretty much through all of the Disney films now and I can't abide chick flicks (or any other romantic love centred films) where utterly improbable notions of love are spouted by improbably beautiful people, so any other film recommendations that you found inspiring, funny, and generally a great way to spend a few hours with, let me have them, can be in English, French, or German.

Thanks!

Re: Recommendations for happy / funny / inspiring films (no chick flicks please)

I want to state i am not a Leonardo Dicaprio fan but just finished watching " The Beach" as my girlfriend never saw it.. good movie.

Last week i watched "Catch Me If You Can" , also with Leo Dicap and Tom Hanks, kinda enjoyed that one now.

Yesterday i've seen " 51st State " with Samual L. Jackson, great movie

Going to the back of my video and dvd closet i found the following movies i will enjoy in the next evenings :

Coming to America ( Eddie Murphy cracks me up in this one )
Die hard ( all of them )
Indiana Jones ( all of them except the last one, that was pure crap, pardon my language)
Leathal weapon ( all of them)

In the "weird " movie section of my database i have " Trainspotting ", the spud scene is a classic but it is an akward yet nice movie.

In relation to the " we air them every Christmas on tv ", here they are :

Home Alone
Sisi
White Christmas
The sound of music

Hope these are of any use to you, and if so, enjoy

I'm serious about the no love thing. I watched "Love Actually" the other day and it had me angry and in tears because life is NEVER, EVER like that and this week proved that to me once and for all.

Back on topic. Films to cheer you up.

All four Die Hard films were watched last weekend, boy do I love those films. Indiana Jones, great idea and I forgot about Lethal Weapon. Good stuff, thanks!

More of what i hope to be goodstuff that is part of my ever growing collection : ( sorry for not linking them , way to many)

Fools Golds, Chicken Run,The Transporter (all) , The whole 9 & 10 yards, Face Off, Speed 1 &2, The Bourne ( identity, supremacy etc), Shrek 1,2 &3 - skip 4 as it blows big time, The Rock, Mr & Mrs Smith, Deat At the Funeral (Uk version, not the Us version, Uk version is the best) , Kangeroo Jack,Road Trip,Fight club,Boat Trip,In Bruges,Hot Fuzz,Euro Trip (winner),American Beauty,Hannibal(so good !) Crank 1&2,Rush Hour (all),The Mummy ( all except the Scorpion King),Three Kings,The green Mile.

That should keep you busy for a while , more movies in the collection but i don't think so you are in to Thriller border Horror movies as it wasn't on the list

Series : Entourage, Nip Tuck, Cougar Town

Boy have some catching up to do.. movie time !

Hi Kittster,

amazing how wide the potential for answers your question has and yet i struggled to think of something quickly....from the top of my head try the Truman Show which i love for its quirky brilliance and an oldie but always a fall over hilarious goodie is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels...

Wait, just thought of A Fish Called Wanda too....

Well I don't know if this meets your criteria but I thought this was a brilliant film: Slumdog Millionaire.

Re: Recommendations for happy / funny / inspiring films (no chick flicks please)

I like silly comedies or angel movies when the going has been a bit rough

An nice comfy oldie:
- Heaven can wait (Warren Beatty)
- Where Dreams may come (Robin Williams) is my favorite
- Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey) the silly sequel Evan Almighty was worth a smile

the very best
- Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

Mais le cinéma francophone cache des perles rares:
- Amélie Poulin
- Le Petit Nicolas
- Agathe Cléry (very nice)
- Les Visiteurs !!

I love old films, like Bringing up Baby (1938), with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Also Pillow Talk (1959) with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. They are actually romantic comedies but are a million times funnier and more subtle than modern day ones, such as Love Actually.

Re: Recommendations for happy / funny / inspiring films (no chick flicks please)

no rom coms then? (i love love actually though...heh)

ok...am more into tv series at the mo'

funny: i've been watching "modern family" / "big bang theory" and "how i met your mother" also "30 rock" makes me LOL

and since it's xmas then you should watch "scrooged", it's my fave.

also watch when "harry met sally" (ok it's rom-com but not cheesy)

and when in doubt go watch any star wars (even the one with jar jar..)
